First Oil Change in SY ---

Anything different on our turbo'd vehicles I should know? I have done it many times in my Acuras , 67 Camaro, and 96 z28 .... and know that with a SUPERCHARGER you have to change a separate oil compartment. The turbos use the engine oil right? Thanks guys....sorry for the "noob" question. Just got 3000 off my last oil and while its warm out I wanted to change it ---

Drain it and add new oil. Change the filter. Use Mobil 1 or another good synthetic. And you're good to go.

Cut a milk jug or something in half to drop the filter into and not get oil all over.

A two liter soda bottle cut down works best. You always want to use synthetic oil with a turbocharger since it lubricates the bearings.

Good point. I forgot about mentioning that one.

If you are a true oil change grease monkey you can do it without spilling. :rotf:

Re: First Oil Change in SY ---

OK, you guys got me, NOOB MISTAKE OF THE YEAR!!!! I spent about 20 min under the truck looking for the OIL FILTER, hahah. I FINALLY found it under the air filter , then proceeded to crush the hell out of it trying to take it off with the adj oil filter that uses a chain. It seemed like I was going to rip the entire unit off the side of the fender, it was moving ALL around.

It is an ACDELCO filter and has all sorts of dents in it now. Can I drive it dented like that?

WHAT TYPE OF WRENCH DO YOU ALL USE TO GET IN THAT TIGHT SPOT BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE FILTER AND THE INNER FENDERWELL??? Looks too tight to get anything that uses a socket in there?! Thanks ---

EDIT: and now I understand the 2 liter/milk jug thing, oil would drip everywhere without it!!! ---

Usually an oil filter wrench or a strap wrench works good, maybe your hands if you are strong. Your oil filter shouldn't be torqued on so tight that it gets dents when you take it off.

BTW You should replace the dented filter!

Re: First Oil Change in SY ---

just use a large screw driver and spear it thru the oil filter, then push it away from you to loosen it.

Looking down on it, I was turning it to the left, and now that I think of it ... if I was looking up from the bottom that would be to the right.....so I need to turn it to the RIGHT (to the firewall) looking from the top?! ---

EDIT: Thats what I get for drinking before doing new stuff to my truck, hehe ---

Re: First Oil Change in SY ---

and remember do not over tighten it when you put the new one on. tighten til it makes contact then 1/4 turn. that's all you need and it will solve the problem you are having now the next time you attempt an oil change.
