failed my emissions test today for the second time

ok i took the syclone to have it inspected on 10/20/06 and it failed results are
high speed:
HIGH SPEED
standard current result
HC 220 148 PASS
CO 1.20 1.28 FAIL
CO2 13
O2 1.8
Dilution >6.0 14.28 PASS

LOW SPEED
standard current result
HC 220 301 FAIL
CO 1.2 0.36 PASS
CO2 13.1
O2 2.3
DILUTION >6.0 13.46 PASS

so i tiik it home, did a seafoam decarb two times. the truck is running great and there is no check engine light. plugs, wires, cap/rotor, fuel filter are all less then 6,000 miles old. the truck does its little smoke when first started due to leaking valve guides but does not smoke otherwise whether cruising or under boost. cleaned my k&n the day after the inspection running 93 octane fuel. took it back today and here are the results
HIGH SPEED
standard current result
HC 220 1339 FAIL
CO 1.20 1.99 FAIL
CO2 11.7
O2 3.2
Dilution >6.0 13.71 PASS

LOW SPEED
standard current result
HC 220 615 FAIL
CO 1.2 0.48 PASS
CO2 13.4
O2 2.0
DILUTION >6.0 13.88 PASS

SO ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA!?!?!? I have never seen a vehicle get worse after a decarb. all they would tell me at the dealership was that it had a miss and that is why it failed. the truck has the same idle it did a year ago when it passed the inspection, if anything a smoother one.

any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

I had a problem passing mine last time also.
It to, was running great.

I bought a can of stuff @ Auto zone for passing smog. Not sure if that did anything.
But,,, I had also changed my plugs, car & rotor that had 11,000 miles on them.
Took it back for testing & it passed.

What is you fuel pressure set @?
I know on my truck, If I set it too low like, 38psi it would have a lean miss causing it to fail, bumped it back up to 42-43 psi then it passed.
Make sure to tell them to really heat up the cat.(AKA)light off the cat.

They hold the RPM's to about 2000 RPM for about five minutes,,, then do there testing.

If you just want to know if your Truck is going to fail or pass, w/out Sacramento DMV being notified, turn your idle up to 1200 RPM, but @ least you will know your truck will pass or not
.
If it looks like it will pass just turn your idle back down. but keep it close to 1000 RPM.
Good luck!

Not that this will help your emission testing, but did you change your oil after you used the seafoam stuff. I don't know if it's the same as the Top End Cleaner or whatever the dealer sells, but your supposed to change the oil and plugs after with the other stuff. You might want to check that out.

When they run your truck do they run it on a dyno or ??

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

no, I didn't change the oil yet, I am going to use the royal purple instead of what i have now so i am waiting on the oil to get here. I can not think of a single AWD dyno for emissions testing in the houston area, so they do the two speed idle test. I think what is strange is when i took it in there the first time it barely failed, then after the decarb it failed really bad. and i drove it kinda hard before i got there so everything would be nice and toasty, but they let it set for over two hours before they finnaly took it back for the re-inspection. and I did ask them to make sure it was warmed up but i think they got peeved with me and blew me off. oh well, i talked to a muffler shop and they said they had two different cats they could put on it, one is a standard replacement (welded in ofcourse) and the other is a high flow with a better burn off or something like that. i think i am gonna go ahead and do the higher flow one and get the cat back in 3 inch while i am there. then all i will need to do is locate me a 3 inch down pipe and it will be high flow all the way. so i guess i will take the truck there in the am and see about that cat. and let youall know

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

I would do a search on here about emissions because there's been tons of talk about how to pass in the past but off the top of my head i'd suggest driving your truck for a little while prior to the test to ensure that the truck is hot as possible, maybe turn off the ic pump to help with this. Also make sure you have a cat and a good tune up then lower your fuel pressure real low like 35 - 40ish I believe but Im not sure since I haven't ran my sy thru inspection for at least four years now so do a search and good luck

based on the above exhaust gas reading, you have a exhaust leak somewhere, check your entire exhaust system for leaks. O2 shouldn't be that high. i would replace the cat as its supposed to eat up the unburned fuel (HC) and partially burned fuel (CO). do this and CO2 will be brought back up to over 14.

are you warming up the truck enough? if you want to test cat effenciency, get vehicle up to normal operating temp and get an infared temp gun and check temp. before and after the cat. a functioning cat should be hotter after.

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

i do have a leak but i believe it is after the cat....mine is welded in.....and i did drive it around to warm it up, even told the service writer i wanted to wait and left it running while i went in to talk to him. but like i said it was over two hours before they did anything with it. i am going to that muffler shop in the am and i am going to have all the exhaust replaced from the dp back.....with flanges....i think the flange is still on the dp, but the converter is welded on to the orriginal cat piping. he said the bigger one is supposed to run hotter?!?! and to have less emissions. but flow better. and he did tell me about measureing the temp before and after also about a pressure drop accross the converter. anyway i will go by and see reguardless. wish me luck and thanks for the input.

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

ok, so i have 2.5 inch exhaust from cat back, if i go to 3 inch and it is not manderal bend, is that a bad thing? my 2.5 is not manderal bend. what is the actual advantage to manderal bends? i know for high hp cars it is important to do everything to maximize and all but i don't want super hp numbers, and would a 3 inch be louder than a 2.5? just courious. i will be better off with the 3 inch right?even though it is not smooth bends. and i will ask about the cat when i go there.

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

I just had my truck smogged Monday here in Cali.

Two speed test Idle (731 rpm) and running (2470).

Idle: CO2% 14.1%
O2% 0.9

HC (PPM) Max 120 Measured 17

CO% Max 1.00 Measured 0.00% LOL

Running: CO2% 14.5%
O2% 0.3

HC (PPM) Max 180 Measured 10 LOL

CO% Max 1.00 Measured 0.00% LOL

So I had a super magic smog....

Here is food for thought: I dont have an exhaust after the cat so when then they went to put in the exhaust probe it went directly into the cat and only made it about 2" and just kind of hung there. :)

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

ok, my update...... replaced my plugs and wires. plugs looked fine but i already bought the new ones so i just put the new oes in, changed my oil, only had about 2200 miles on it but figured while i was there....new plug wires....i was not going to change them but they were breaking as i was pullingthem off, i don't think too highly of the msd wires right now, put on what i could get that day, cheap autozone brand....... and replace the cat with that "high effecient" one. asked the guy about it when i was getting it done and he said all he knew was tha it was for higher milage vehicles. not so sure if it was higher flowing but oh well, i will replace the entire exhaust later. took it to the stealership and it passed with flying colors!!!!!! even though the tech said "it still has a miss" go figure. so i am legal again!!!!!!

Congrats!!!
Feels good to pass smog & run 12's!!!!
That's how my smog ended up, basically changed plugs, rotor, cap, wires.
And all my plugs looked good, & truck was running great,,, go figure.

move to south carolina where we dont give a damn for the environment and you wont have to worry about this kinda bullshit. :rotf: and you can cut that restrictive ass cat off to, aint supposed to, but no one checks or cares. ;)

seriously though i really do feel for you guys that have to deal with that crap. im glad we dont have to, but im sure we will eventually. i just hope it comes after im so old i dont care about going fast no more and the only race ill be running is to make it to bathroom before i shit myself. :rotf:

Re: failed my emissions test today for the second time

I am glad it passed, now i wont have to sell it to the salvage yard...........kidding. i just bought a lap top but it has the usb input and not the serial port. I am gonna get the datamaster on to it and then see about a cable and go try to figure out why it feels like it is falling on its face after the 1-2 shift. however i will say the truck is liking this cold weather even though it wont boost past 10lbs. are the new mustang gts fast? i had one mess with me on the way home, they got the jump and i took off with no boost, autometer went up to 10lbs and i was reeling them in and we shut down around 95 or so. there back bumper never past my front bumper. just courious, because like i said it was only making 10 lbs and it felt like it was not running right. still thinking about that 3inch exhaust too
