Exhaust Talk

To all who run aftermarket exhaust stuff...

1. What did you replace?
2. Why did you choose that brand?
3. Did they help or hurt performance?
4. What would you do differently?
5. Why?

Re: Exhaust Talk

Catalytic converter was missing on my Saudi Ty and I now have a 3" SS exhaust from the turbo all the way back with a cat delete. Not sure of the muffler but it too is SS.

Differently, I would have V-band clamps wherever I can. I hate the slide-over style.

Exhaust has wastegate vent-to-exhaust which I like, not to atmosphere.

Re: Exhaust Talk

I wanted a quiet-ish stock sounding exhaust

1. 3" turbo back JSM style downpipe, Magnaflow high flow bullet cat, Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, stock tailpipe
2. Cost
3. Helped performance
4. Run a more straight thru muffler design
5. Its a little too quiet

After driving with this setup for almost 2 years I feel like my exhaust is holding me back. I think I am going to remove the cat and try a different straight thru design muffler or possibly delete it all together. I think I am also going to move my oxygen sensor further down instead of right behind the turbo. Anyone have any input?

Re: Exhaust Talk

I went with the SM 3" down pipe with JSM style flange, cat delete then ATR out the back. I picked this combo because I'm still running a stock turbo and wanted a fairly easy install. Total price was close to $1500 (ouch) but the exhaust will probably outlast me as well as the rest of the truck. I'm just now starting to see the full benefits of this upgrade due to a degraded intercooler setup and tuning challenges. It spools quicker, sounds throaty with no drone. Louder than stock but enough to make you say Hmmm.? Very happy with this set up.

Re: Exhaust Talk

I fitted the RPM SS Cat Back. The truck already had an aluminised 3" fitted to what I believe was the original muffler. It was actually a work of art how it was bent and routed over the axle.
The RPM fits OK, but routes different to the one I replaced. Once fitted and positioned, it hasn't given any problem, except I only got one hanger/clamp with it and haven't been able to source a suitable SS one over here. That said, its been on a few years without issue now. Sounds nice with the SSMagnaflow muffler, although the muffler has surface corrosion due to where I live (by the sea) and salt on the roads in winter.
The truck always overboosted with the 3" aluminised system and also with the RPM. I'm now running with a Turbotweak chip and it runs absolutely like I had always wanted it to. I cant recommend Erics product enough. Although not directly related, I did discover that my original GM 2bar MAP sensor seemed to be reading high, which could have exaggerated the overboost issue I had.

Three inch ATR from turbo back, cat delete, pit bull muffler, installed back in 1999. works very well and I love the sound.

Re: Exhaust Talk

i've made my own systems.

I've tried 3" stainless with a single Thrush turbo-style muffler. A 3" dual muffler system with the mufflers in series (one round, one oval) to cancel more frequencies. A side exit 3" stainless with magnaflow straight-thru muffler. And currently running a 3" aluminum exhaust, with a SLP Loudmouth resonator, ahead of a tiny Magnaflow round muffler, and aluminum out to the bumper. Never used a cat converter.

I'm going to switch it up this winter and run a half-aluminum downpipe, and side exit aluminum.

The side exit will get on your nerves if you drive for awhile. I have a loud engine, but i dont mind the noise since its a fun truck and not a DD.

Dumping the exhaust under the truck makes the noise resonate through the truck, and the bed amplifies the drone. Also if your tune isnt spot on, you will have fuel soot all over the underside of the truck. Throwing the exhaust out the back makes a huge different in cab noise, versus a dump, or side exit.

Buy quality pipe with quality v-bands (interlocking), and a quality muffler. Dont buy junk.

Re: Exhaust Talk

3" stainless turbo back custom setup Borla XR1 muffler. I think is sound sweet. You be the judge. I've always liked the Borla mufflers very nice quality.
