I need some help. I have been out of the SYTY game for a bit but have a chance to purchase another. I have owned several but this one is different. It is in real rough shape. It is a two owner Ty with 200K. The motor blew up last week and now he is interested in getting rid of it. It is 100% stock but every major panel will need replaced. Body mounts are rough and it has 200k on the drive train. It is clearly worth more as parts than a re useable truck but I would hate to part it out. The owner selling it has a lot of sentimental attachment as well so part of the agreement would be to avoid parting it out at all cost. What should a terrible shape truck be worth?? I have an idea but all the ones I dealt with in the past were under 100k and in much better shape. Any help appreciated.

Sentimental value =$0

If it's toast,it's toast. Offer him 1/2 of what you could make off of it.Maybe come up a little but the truck is what it is.

Re: Eval

Even if the engine was not blown, a 200k mile typhoon with rust issues would be worth what, $3,000?

Needing engine I would say offer him $1000. It's worth thousands more in parts but people don't realize the headache it is parting a vehicle.

Code what?
You need to evaluate what it needs to bring to your standards. I got a project cheap, 2k for a 92 Ty. It ended up being a project not worth bringing back. It took a lot of thought to part it. It would have been a bad financial decision on my part to bring it back to my standards. The market for these trucks are poor, the investment has to be worth it to decide to follow through IMO. If you can't bring it back to your standards to enjoy it without going over budget then don't risk it. Things to consider are the hard to find parts it may require, rebuilding the 4.3 is extremely affordable. Goodluck

Re: Eval

Restoring SyTys is a losing battle. There is a good looking Ty on ebay right now with a ton of work, parts and time in it. The guy is looking to get like 19K out of it but at the end of the day it comes down to odometer reading and overall value. Don't buy cars that have an emotional attachment, it is a business deal and no good business deal is ever made with emotion.

As far as how much would it be worth? I would take $1500 cash in $100 bills, lay them out on the hood and tell him to take it or leave it. I have yet to have anyone turn down cash like that.

Re: Eval

Barrett Jackson and Mecum have never once mentioned mileage on restored vehicles. That being said, listen to what everyone else is saying. There won't be a market for these for another 10-20 years. You're wasting your money if you don't think objectively. Now is probably the last time you can buy one cheap. Find a good daily driver and start from there.

Parting out a car is a LOT of work, and not worth the extra cash in the end unless you do it as a business.
