Engine Internals (And Externals) Sonoma GT

Drag SGT

All Throttle No Bottle
I'm finally getting somewhere planning out what I want to do with the engine from my 92 Sonoma GT and I've decided to stick with the V6. I have a short list of things I've figured out to put into the truck but I'm still missing some that I'm not so sure of. Here's the list

Ported 96+ Heads (Junkyard?)
Billet Stroker Crank (RPM)
Oliver Rods (RPM)
JE Pistons (RPM)
Comp Cam (Not sure which one though)

It's a start but there are still pieces of the puzzle missing. I don't plan to drive the truck but maybe twice a week in warmer weather (No winter driving) What I need from the community is suggestions on the other parts that I need. This is all I can think of

Rocker?
Rollers?
Pushrods?
Fuel Injectors?

Anything else? Many thanks in advance for any help as to where to get these parts. As you can see most of the parts I'm thinking about getting are from Race Proven Motors. If you know of a better/cheaper place to get these parts (Not to diss on RPM), also let me know. Thanks

~Chris~

Billet main caps? sounds like a pricey motor you're putting together....you gonna turbo it? if not, the billet crank may not be necessary and will save you a ton of money.... edit: ahh, stroker...nevermind

to use a stroker crank would you have to run less boost?

no way man :D .....let Maxtor answer that one if he reads this... he runs like 30 psi on a stroker and it's been the longest lasting, most reliable syty 10 second motor that I think we've ever seen here...but it's also a bowtie block....

i will be getting a bowtie block. just seeing what combo i should go with. i know that i was thinking of twin turbo's and a custome intake and pontiac heads (the heads i already have). i'm tring to do what syborg is doing. making it to drive on the street not only on the track (i want to be able to drive the truck around and show it off).i always wanted one since they first came out. now i got my favorite color (royal blue).

intake manifold?

I think I'll stick with stock for now, just have it cleaned and ported for more flow. I DO plan on turboing it in the future but the budget doesn't call for both to be done right now. At this stage, I can afford to do the internals/externals, new exhaust (I have a leak), and maybe headers. What all has to be done to the heads to make it fit my CPI? I want to make sure the machine shop doesn't screw anything up. Just re tap where the bolts go? JWaller, I'll have to get back to you on the crank. Is the crank itself from strokerkits.com any good? I guess from reading other posts about them that they take a long time to get (8-10 Weeks?) So far, I've evaluated a part price up to 4000. (That's Crank, Pistons, Rods) The budget's about 8K so I guess I'm doing good. It's not in the budget to go for a bowtie block and with college, it probably won't be for another couple of years, so why not stick with stock block for now.

I still need advice ESPECIALLY on the rockers (1.5 vs 1.6?) and fuel injectors (Where to get, and which one)

I was looking at either a TPI or MPFI setup from AFI, was leaning towards TPI but don't think it would fit with new heads. Thanks for the help guys, keep it comming

Given what the rest of your combo is I would skip the billet stroker crank. It would be more cost effective to add two more cylinders or if you bent on a fast 4.3, supercharge or use the SyTy intake setup with a turbocharger.

What injector size would be best for a truck that'll be used at the track and eventually have one, if not two t/c's attached to it? I'm still not sure on the cam and cam size might determine my rockers size. Any suggestions?

Geez, that TT setup would have been a nice find. Almost tempted to call and ask how much he wants for it :D

I sent the guy who was auctioning the kit an email. Hopefully he'll get back to me. But back to our regular programming....

Injectors? is bigger better? What size do I need to go with? (1/4 truck, turbocharge in future)

I think I'll call comp cams and see what they say about which cam to use, wish me luck. I've been talking to Mike at RPM about his vortec header package, I might go with those, not sure yet though

I guess if you dont count the head problems and intake gaskets then ya your right.

no my cranks are not from strokerkits.com. I have no idea what that is or who they are. stroker motors are the most expensive ones you can imagine and are only for the deepest pockets.

I had a cracked head last year (problem, not "problems").... most likely caused when the Felpro head gasket gave way. My heads are heavily ported, so there isn't much metal there when something goes wrong. It has Cometics in it now, zero problems.

Intake gaskets?? Not sure where you are going with that one or what false rumors you have heard. Never had a problem, either did Les.

Motor has been together since 99/00 and never been apart except the heads. The truck has seen many passes at 25-30 psi. If anyone has questions about my motor and wants accurate information I would be happy to answer any questions.

Re: Engine Internals (And Externals) Sonoma GT

Hey i have an Extrude honed upper and Lower CPI that would be perfect for your build, all it needs is to be welded up to fit the newer vortecs and your set, it will still reuse the stock CPI injector and nut kit and has also had the TB bored out for more flow.

I can send you pics if your interested.
