Engine Block Help...

Hello all, I would like to pick up a 4.3 and start working on it as a swap out for the stock motor in a ty. I want to build it up for a Big turbo but it has to be able to still be driven daily about 40 miles (to and from work 18 miles each way 4 days a week). From what I have found so far searching is that the ty uses a LB4 block? Right? Can I just get a 4.3 out of a S10 like a 97 and build it up or do I have to find a specific block to work? I would want to go with 2.02/1.6 heads and have them ported to suit the turbos taste. 412 or 422 can something like that maybe a little bigger as long as its still street friendly. ported intake and such. Probably go with a 3.5 borla exhaust and a nice set of headers. Of course all the usual little stuff like the bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, and stc. I was also thinking of the ATR air-to-air intercooler. Anyway, My question was about the block so I hope someone can help. If anyone has a real nice street set-up they would like to share including which pistone, crank, and rods to use on the lower end as well as their top end set-up I would really appriciate that also. Thanks and I can't wait to hit the streets next summer. Its gonna be a great year ! ! ! :D

IF you want it to last, you need a pre 1992 engine block without balance shafts. Check out the post called (The holy grail of 4.3 info!!) located in the Forum under Member Area, The Vault.

non balance shaft block and replace the main caps with Pro-Gram billet ones, b/c syty's have different main caps then the regular 4.3s. Also ATR doesnt make an air/air intercooler.

Here is one I found on ebay. Here is the auction number 7942163287, Is this what you are talking about? I thought ATR made the A/A ic, I have the letters wrong. It is a A/A IC and around $1400 for the kit. Thanks

So has anyone ever seen anything happen to a built balance shaft motor, or is this just somthing someone thought of and everone thinks it now. I know just buy looking at it the valley looks weaker but just wanted to know if anyone has ever built one and had any problems?

Hell, if you want it I've got a stock 4.3L block that you can come pick up in Carbondale, Illinois for the taking. It's an 86, and still has the fuel pump boss. Yours for coming and getting it outa the back of my van, even though it is serving for traction right now. It'll definitely need a good punchin though, but it'd be a good starter and the price is right  Won't ship, sorry.

it's not weaker, but it's easier to find the correct parts for a non-balance shaft block...specifically the cam and timing set...you have to contact cloyes directly to get a true roller timing set...or at least i did...davecalidad on this forum successfully built one and ran decent numbers with no problems...one thing is for sure, and thats a very smooth idle without the typical syty shaking at idle...it's not a bowtie block by any means, but neither is your typical non balance shaft block...i just built one up and will let you know if the lifter valley breaks....

awesome!!
but the cam is readily available from jegs, summit or comp directly.
price from jegs was 260.00 for part #56-460-08 the lift is .500/.510

i have this cam in my 97 s-10 ss and its the best 260 ive ever spent.
note* i had to advance my cam 2 degrees to make it finnaly run right.
but the cloyes has provisions for advancing the cam or retarding the cam 2 degrees

also... the true roller timing chain is readily available from jegs, summit, or cloyes. jegs price was 103.00 for the timng set.

Sounds like a plan, I will have to see how far you are away and make some plans on a road trip. Do you want me to bring you some sand gags to replace the weight of the motor? I will also need a contact number if you don't mind. PM me with it or let me know and I will just send you my number.

Thanks
