EGT install into downpipe.

So I bought an EGT off a member and it looks great - it fills the hole in my dash and complements the other Phantom gauges nicely.

Installation is the next question and I was wondering what people would do.

A) drill a hole, tap for 1/8 NPT in the exhaust pipe (SS 304) and leave it.

B) drill a hole and weld a bung to a t-clamp for fast removal/istallation

C) drill a hole and weld the bung in for the sensor.

I think C is the best option but it is also the biggest pain in the ass. I need to remove the dp and get it welded. I will do it myself as I have a MIG but buying the SS wire, some 304 round bar and a 3" SS pipe for practice will run me about £70. A welder would probably be around £40 but this is a potentially useful skill.

What would you guys do? I think I am going to go with C but purely based on the knowledge that if it were the other two then it's only really half a job and that would irritate me.

Would the clamp option or just the drill/tap option be ok?

:dunno:

If you do it do it good...

Option C,

remove the DP and let it weld by a good welder

Re: EGT install into downpipe.

The last welder I hired did kind of a crappy job imo so this time I thought I might learn to do it myself. It seems that people with skills in the UK are hard to find.

Mark, autometer makes a probe that doesnt need a bung.It takes a 1/4" hole wit a band clamp and gasket.I have it on one of my trucks and it works fine and doesnt leak.Autometer #5249

Hi Jack,

I think that's the exact same one that I have. The gauge is 5745 I believe. Is there a special ceramic gasket? Is it a special clamp?

Yes,the screw clamp has a 1/4 hole in it for the probe with a special gasket. You drill a hole in the dp,put the gasket on the probe, put the probe in the hole with the clamp over it and the clamp goes around the dp.

Re: EGT install into downpipe.

Damn - I am missing the gasket and the special clamp. Do you know why I need the gasket? I guess I could make up an alternate clamp unless you know of a way to get spares.

Thanks for confirming. If you have any suggestions otherwise, let me know :D

Re: EGT install into downpipe.

You need the gasket to stop it from leaking.I just went out and looked at mine, the probe goes thru the clamp first, then an adjustable collar(to adjust the depth)then a small round ceramic gasket. You'd be better off buying the kit or send autometer an e-mail about the parts.Jegs sell the probe kit for about 60 bucks

Re: EGT install into downpipe.

Yeah, I thought I might need those. By the time I have had them shipped, paid taxes and bought the kit, that's $100 which is the same price as the weld solution I came up with. Damn.

So much for a cheap gauge install! :rotf:

I guess it can't hurt to email Autometer. Is there anything special about the clamp? The pics on eBay and other sites make it look like a standard albeit large hose clamp with a hole drilled through.
