okay, i gotta get in on this one.
i say bullshit!!
10 grand in a smallblock - i could wipe every syty's 4.3's dick IN THE DIRT!
now, before everyone comes for me with torches and a rope, i LOVE MY SY!
but, in truth, i'd swap out the v6 for a 400 plus inch small block any day of the week, provided the sbc gets good efi, etc.
why? - easy - no piece of shit gm ecu and bitchy speed density, no bullshit with all our little niggly makes me wanna commit suicide problems, lighter - oh, yes, kids, it is - assuming alum heads - , ready parts availability, no heat issues, no lag, instant sick torque, more top end power, etc etc.
hell - my v8 s10 will eat my sy on it's best day up top - say, past 70 it'll literally walk away - and the sy is not stock by a long stretch, tho has nothing exotic either. and, in fairness, the v8 s10 is a 6 speed. but, what gets there first gets there first.

I was using the example of Ty with V8 so I assume that would include AWD (which we know hurts the top end and probably all around drag strip performance at 11 sec range)

Their is nothing wrong with the GM ECU or Speed Density, what do you think most of the aftermarket ECU use? Everyone I have seen uses a map sensor.

I honestly believe (if keeping the AWD) which one will be faster depends on how radical of a cam or turbo is used and how streetable it would be.

A 400+ cubic Inch Chevy is going to cost $4000 to build a short block if using forged crank which would be need for higher hp levels. Aluminum heads are $1500, Valvetrain another $1000, Fuel injection and intake $2000, plus headers, exhaust, radiator, motor mounts, oil pan will eat the rest of the budget (I am not even sure if a stroker crank's oil pan will clear the front differential) I will leave out the tranny and TC as both combo will need them. If you stick with a hydrualic cam and something with a reasonable duration for good idle, it wouldn't make much more than 550hp. A solid lifter cam would make more hp , but the valvetrain costs go up. Ofcourse this just my opinion. I am into corvette's (I have an 86) and for me it would be more money to run 11's in my Vette than Sy (and lot more money to run mid 12's which is where I hope both my vehicles are next year)

In either case The $10K budget doesn't allow for a good aftermarket ECU (aka speedopro) in either senario if you buying everything new.

The SBC would probably be easier to tune and have a better ignition system.

BTW If the V8 was 2wd it would be no contest as the weight saving would .3-4. and the luanches would be better on slicks and gain another few .1's.

I understand your need to know my costs to date, however if my wife ever happened to read this forum, I would be dead.

That was misunderstanding. I was asking what do you have in truck as in parts (ie V8, V6 Turbo) not cost.

this is gonna be a fun, entertaining thread i think!
i am speaking, very generally, of a streetable motor - ie - it'll idle, get over 16 mpg highway, squeak thru emissions.
at that power level, for ex, a forged crank is absolutely not necesary.
2500 in heads is way over what one would ever need to spend.
in the 10k dolalr amount, i was not taking into acct engine swap parts.
the v8 will net more working room then our oem setup.
i maintain our oem ecu and components basically suck.
2 block learn cells? - gimme a freaking break! - it's dumber then a 386 cpu relatively speaking.
motor mounts and radiator will all work fine from oem.
i am talking hyd roller cam, same as oem.
btw, a solid cam costs no more then a flat hydraulic, nor does it's valvetrain.
lastly, extremely few people are making 550 hp with 4.3's, real world.
i am not saying no one, nor am i saying its anywhere near impossible - just DAMN rare.
i stand my ground.
have a nice day all!

stroker crank larger than 400 are all forged as far as I know. The $1000 valvetrain includes, cam, rocker roller, pushrod, timing chain, gaskets ect.

In general the higher you rev, you will need to spend more money on to prevent valve float, ie titanium retainers, better rocker rollers, valves spring to accept larger lift(dual and triple springs), and lighter valves. What the RPM range is dicates what is needed.

Hey I am not try to create a flame your entitled to your opinion, I just think it could go either way depending on the build up (ie I think it would be close). I think if their was more money in the budget say $15K or $20K the V8 is really going to have an adavantage but the same thing could be said for the 4.3 if the budget was $5K

dgoodhue and everyone.
My goodness, I leave this site for a day, and when I come back, I have 30 minutes of reading on just this one thread.

First of all allow me to say that I am glad that this thread is what seems to be a none hostile thread. I for one do not want to praise my truck over a ty on a ty site. (Maybe on another site I would, ha ha).

Hue, I have a 406 sbc with an all forged bottom end. Brodix 18 degree heads that flow 300 cfm and a fully rollerized solid top end. A massaged Super victor intake and an 830 honed to an 870 annular boost carb, an MSD 6 al and a retard box for when I hit the juice. I have 2 inch primaries collecting into 3.5 inchers and then dual three inch with spring loaded dumps, so that if I walk on it, it is wide open exhaust.

If I was to do it all over again, I would install twin turbos with intercoolers on a sbc 400. Boost is the way to go. I wouldn’t go with a super charger because they rob so much power in order to make power.

no flames taken!
this isnt a competition - just benchracing.
anyway, it'd be interesting to actually spec out what it'd cost to get to this dollar amount spent on each given motor, and what we'd get from them.
honestly, i kinda spend the day doing this, so i dont actually wanna take the time, but i'd b thrilled to particiapte/respond if anyone wants to.
defenders of the mighty 4.3, arise, and fight!
ont he stroker crank issue, there b plenty of 3.75 inch stroke cast cranks on the market - that's oem stroke on a 400 small block. and they're STINKING CHEAP. you'd only need a 6500 rpm motor to make that kinda power, other factors like intake dependent.
for the guys with hard ons and like to suffer with oem ecu's, i believe ours will run 8 injectors....

 Wow, a little more than I was expecting...that truck must fly! I notice your in Canada, Ty are pretty rare up their and from what I read can no longer be imported, so I can give you some slack on a modified blazer  j/k

Are you AWD, 4WD or converted to 2wd? Have run your truck at the track?

Hey rock;
I will see what I can do about the pics. My hard drive went on me and I have to send it away for data recovery and then warrantee will give me a new hard drive. In the mean time I have a loaner and I have been hesitant to upload all the devices for just a motnh only to do it all over again. Give me a month or two, and then I will start a new thread.

I can picture what the eBay guy's problem is. He's probably got this Typhoon that was supposed to be fast. Except he doesn't have a clue. I'm imagining he has the wrong spark plugs, the mofo pings when he gets on it, all timing is being taken out (0* advance), intercooler pump died long ago, IC is probably empty. So basically he has a 15 second sled. He therefore assumes the turbo V6 is just a toy motor, he needs a "Real man's motor", the almighty V8.

Little does he know with a bit of care and maintenance (coupled with carefully selected tuneup parts) his truck would run AT LEAST a second faster and probably make him happy enough to not want to swap motors. Or at least enough to make him realize the potential the Turbo V6 beholds. Oh well, sounds like he's either incapable or not willing to learn the fuel injected 4.3 turbo v6 motor; so it's a lost cause either way. His loss.

:) A while ago on the corvetteforum, we had one guy that had a 86 Supercharged Corvette, he claimed the 6 or so ECM trouble codes that he was getting was due to the SC. Everyone tried to convince him to trouble shoot the codes. He ripped off the SC and still got the same codes, he ripped off the Fuel injection and put on a Carb.

Man that reminds me of people I've seen who throw away valuable computers because of one bad file and they don't understand how to troubleshoot it. So they say that computer is "junk" and buy a new one sometimes of lesser performance than the old one they just threw away!! Sometimes the fix is so simple it could have been resolved in 5 minutes. If they only knew!
