Duel Injector Intake

A couple of weeks ago there was this wicked intake in the Parts for Sale section that had 2 injectors per cylinder. Could you run a switchable gas/alcohol set up with a manifold like that? Im thinking 1 set on gas, flip a switch and run alcohol on the other set (with a matching ecu program to match). So a switchable gas/alcohol truck. Has anyone done that before??

Re: Duel Injector Intake

Get big enoudh injectors, 2 tanks and pump assemblies and run 2 separate chips. I don't see where adding another set of injectors really helps unless you're running them in addition to the first set, and that creates all sorts of new tuning issues.

Re: Duel Injector Intake

Can megasquirt run staged injectors? NO but get a gen 7 DFI and you can run them staged like a ZR1 small ones till a set point then the others progressivly come on and the others progressively go off. Oh and it DUAL like 2 sets unless you are trying the get you injectors to fight?

Re: Duel Injector Intake

how true, these trucks have enough problems as it is without the injectors fighting each other lol :)

My thinking was not so much additional fuel, but a seperate fuel system where you could run pure alcohol since you can run crazy boost on it.

Re: Duel Injector Intake

That is exactly why the second set of injectors doesn't make sense, just plumb the same set of injectors/rails to 2 fuel systems and choose between the 2.

with a staged setup you can really setup the fuel tables with a step wherever they're staged to come on, I've done it but I'm not sure that it's worth the effort on most vehicles with the selection of injectors that will work fine and are plenty large for most applications, or just run 2 injectors per cylinder all the time...

Re: Duel Injector Intake

I was under the impression that you needed bigger injectors to run alcohol? My concern was that the injectors needed to run pure alchy would be to big for normal driving on gas. I guess with aftermarket tuning (which I would need anyways) you could cure this problem. Either way it would look cool ;)

Happy New Years!

edited to add: Has anyone built a syclone to run on pure alchy? If so what were the times? I guess I could always run a "search" ;)

edited to add again: After doing a search it seems that people have used E-85 and 100% alchy as fuel- but the motor wasnt purpose built. In one of the import magazines awhile back there was a Kia/Hyndai (dont remember which) that had 2 turbo'd 4 bangers (motor in the front and rear- total freak sleeper car). He ran pure alchy and went 10's. The kicker is that since he used alchy he didnt use an intercooler on either motor. Dont know if i'd try that on a sy though....

Re: Duel Injector Intake

Yes, you need bigger injectors to run alcohol, (how much bigger depends on the alcohol), but it’s not like you can run the same chip with the bigger injectors and everything will work fine, you’ll have to run different programs for both anyway, and if that’s the case you can save yourself a ton of money, plumbing and hassle by running whatever injectors you need for alcohol and then just an appropriate chip for each fuel, there’s nothing really wrong with running injectors at 60% duty cycle. Yes, fuel metering is not going to be as precise down low as it would be with smaller injectors, but it would still run fine. Cars idle with >50lb injectors (my brother’s car passed emissions with 77lb/hr injectors in it).

Somewhere there is a movie of that Hyndai doing a burn out with both drivetrains going in opposite directions… pretty cool. I can’t imagine that it’s any more fun to drive at speed as the old school olds drag car that had the same setup (and was wrecked on a regular basis)

Re: Duel Injector Intake

Just a little research update into the madness of running a dual gas/methanol setup (but on the same token owning a SyTy is pure madness...).

Using the Marren Fuel Injection calculator http://www.injector.com/injectorselection.php?PHPSESSID=f64ff04bb53f6701990e5072330370d8 we find:

For a 500hp turbocharged engine (on gas) with an 80% injector duty cycle I would need 72 lb/hr injectors. (617 HP 100% duty cycle).

Now for the same engine running methanol with an 80% injector duty cycle I would need
145.83 lb/hr injectors (like they exist). So were looking at 160lb injectors for meth (which would give a max HP rating of 548.57 at 80%, 685HP at 100%).

Now if I went with:
Set 1 72lb Gas switchable to Meth
Set 2 160lb only Meth

Then the combined 232lb of injector flow at 80% on Meth would give 795.43 HP
100% Duty cycle of 232lb Meth works out to 994 HP (not bad ;) )

Now granted, the injector calculator doesnt mention anything about running 30+lbs of boost and these numbers are in theory only. Obviously it would be much easier to just run 100% Meth all the time (not to mention I could get rid of the intercooloer setup).

Either way crazy plumbing, tuning, and $$$$$- but it would look cool :)
