like any 4 or all wheel drive they handle great in the snow. that is if you know how to drive in the snow. between 10 and 25 mpg depends on how your driving and what you have done to the syty guy.
oh ya these trucks are to valuable to drive in snow because where there's snow usually there's salt.

Lots of SyTy's in Alaska... traction is great.. same with hanling characteristics..

15 Syclones
10 Typhoons

In the Anchorage Area alone...

Only thing you have to potentially worry about is the ABS system and wide tires..
ABS senses lack of traction on ice... and sometimes just keeps on going off... which sucks hardcore if you're on ice.. because you have no control over your decelleration...

Very true. I've had an S-blazer and a TY in the snow. Blazer is better. The TY got really squirrly one time, almost lost it.

I have a feeling that with a tire that isn't 2 feet wide a SyTy would do very well in the snow. Most of us have a speed rated summer tire so the traction on snow and ice isn't that great. It isn't bad, could be better, but it will do better than your F-body

I've run Blizzak snow tires on the stock wheels, and the Sy will go anywhere with them. Works awesome. And when you get a 50-60 degree day, launching on the Blizzaks is like nothing else.

Mine handles just fine in the snow. I've driven it in over a ft. without getting stuck or sliding around(unless it was intentional).

I went to the University of North Dakota. They do great in the snow, although I saw some new looking tyhoons get very ragedy looking over 5 years. I lived in Grand Forks and in ND they dont have alot of tax revenue, so alot of the streets do not get plowed. The trucks held up nice excpect for the cladding. Frozen chunks and salt will eat them up. Also around -30 degrees F snow is more like sand and your nice wheels look like they have been beed blasted. Speaking of low temps I saw -44F up there once you could take a whiz off the second floor and it would vaporize before it hit the ground. Really cool if your a drunk college kid. You just didnt want to leave your pecker out too long or over the next few days it could turn black and fall off from frost bite.

My ty goes good in snow. That all wheel hooks up.I think if you lost control in a slide it might be harder to get back.Practice in a parking lot.It gets about 16mpg with my foot in it every now and then.

Check out this thread... Like others said, I think it comes down to the tires (excluding the driver). My new SZ50EPs are awesome even with a little slush, but any snow accumulation and they start sucking...

snow tires on steel rims?

snow tires on steel rims?

I'm one of those guys who will drive my Ty in the winter, and have had mixed results with snow. All season tires on stock rims give me plenty of traction, but poor control when braking or cornering. I'd like to try out some snow tires, but haven't been able to find ones that will fit the stock rims. Not that I want to use my stock rims in the winter, anyway... So, does anyone know of some cheap steel wheels that will fit the Ty and also accept snow tires?

Thanks,
Ed

Go to the nearest bone yard and pick up a set of steel (or aluminum if you wanna spend more money) wheels off any 4x4 S truck, S blazer, gmc jimmy, or gmc S-15. Instant cheap winter wheels  .

Steel Rims

Steel Rims

I did exactly what Myclone suggested years ago when the Ty was my only vehicle. I now have a second car and the truck gets stored during the winter. I thought the truck handled great in the snow and slush. I still have the stock S-10 steel rims (painted silver) with generic snow tires mounted on them for sale cheap if anyone in the Milwaukee/Chicago area is interested.

I agree with Pittman, I grew up in Grand Forks ND too, Cold isn't it Buddy!!! But if you live in an area that doesn't get a ton of snow I think you'll be OK. Another thing you'll want to do is frequently wash you truck if you're going to drive it in the winter. You'll need to spend the extra 2 bucks and get the good "touch free" wash that does an undercarriage wash. If you don't the salt will eat you're truck up. Another good idea would be to have it undercoated before the snow starts to fall. A few hundred bucks is well worth protecting your truck from the winter elements. Good luck!
