Re: Drive back from Homecoming

well my return could have been easier. I am unsure what caused my headache, but I fought my dam truck all the way home. Not more than 5 miles from the hotel, it starts running poorly (extremely lean AFR) so I think I did a bunch of tuning this weekend, maybe I should switch back to another map. Pull over, switch maps and the truck will not accelerate at all. Mess around with it, changing to several generations of maps and nothing. Since it is lean, I add fuel in the map and limp it down the road. Catch of to smoosh and NJ93TY, and sy1177 attempt to check the fuel pressure but could not remove the schrader valve. We end up turning up fuel pressure a 1/4 turn or so and give it a whirl. It accellerates better but maxes out at 60-65. The slightest bit of throttle (8-12%tps) and it leans way out. I add more fuel in the map and it gets a little better.
I continue limping the old girl home and it slowly gets worse. I combat it by adding more fuel in the map and it keeps going. My next stop I turned up the fuel pressure another 1/4 turn and now it is starting to be better. I can ease it up to 75-80, with decent AFR's. Now the fun starts, after cruising for a while, it starts to go rich. Then it goes more rich, so here I am pulling fuel out of the map. It was a roller coaster of changes to compensate for what I believe is a toasted AFPR. Please chime in with any ideas but understand that I have not looked at it other than on the side of the road. The obvious things I checked are:plug wires (visually good, all attached), vaccum lines, air intake plumbing, removed MSD from the picture. I did eventually make it home, but the last mile was interesting due to being off the highway and having the battery in my laptop go dead. It got slower and slower mph wise to keep from leaning out. People stuck behind me were none to thrilled.

Sure sounds like a AFPR or the fuel pump it's self.. or possibly the line coming off inside the tank. I doubt the tune was changing on you by it's self... It's somthing changing the fuel pressure.
I'd verify consistant fuel pressure first... it might not show up till it get's warm.. so make sure you drive it for a bit around the block and verify good solid pressure. Listen to the pump if possible too.

As he got closer, I started to match his pace a little more (70-75). I was admiring his car...a new ZR-1. I see the driver (an older guy) look at me, fiddle with the steering wheel for a sec, and he hits it hard. Just as I realized what he did, I nail it. It took about a little more than a second to hit 24# of boost (I still had the race tune loaded). He enjoyed his head start for about another second before I started to pull past him up to about 130MPH where I let out. By then, he was deep in my rear-view.

You mentioned you are hoping to run a 10.6 with nitrous. ZR-1's in stock form are documented to run 10.8 and Ranger drove his stock C6 Z06 to a 10.9 early in 2008. .02 advantage on your part is not going to allow you to put him deep in your rear view mirror from 75-130 unless the "old man" was too wise to race on the street. A run from 75-130 in my Z06 takes about 3-4 seconds at the most and I would welcome a match with a modded SyTy from the hole or roll. Just can't find anyone that wants to play. Enjoyed your account none the less.

I do not have nitrous in my Ty whatsoever....I dont want or need it. If you are ever in this area with your ZR1 and want to have some fun, I would be more than willing to oblige. I am fully aware of the ZR1's ability to trap 130 in the 1/4, but a superior vehicle in the hands of an inferior driver will lose every time.

Will definately be checking this out over the weekend. How did your car make it home?

Re: Drive back from Homecoming

Also Alex's et is not matching his mph due to some issue he is working on. I have no doubt if the ZR1 does 10.8 in the qtr with a good driver, alex's ty would give a damn good run even at speed, which actually for alex is one of his VERY strong aspects.

I speak from experience as one of his spanking victims and a one time passenger in the green rocket.

I obviously have not seen it run but many attest to it's quickness. Wasn't knocking Alex's claim but in his sig, his truck is noted to run a 10.75 which means it is almost spot on with a stock ZR-1. The Ty wins out of the hole 99% of the time so if a ZR1 and his Ty are trapping right near the same times, the ZR1 must be making up the loss out of the hole (theoretically speaking) down the straight. Thus, under normal conditions, he would never pass a ZR1 from a 75 MPH if the ZR1 gets the jump. Is it possible, sure and he said it was done so I believe him but the guy in the ZR1 was obviously not deep in the boost if Alex could put him deep in his rearview mirror in 3-4 seconds ;).

My bad, Alex. When you mentioned "without nitrous", I guessed you were equipped with it but just didn't use it. I almost pulled the trigger on a ZR1 but the .01-.02 advantage in trap times and 4-7 feet advantage in stopping distance from 100>0 did not justify the $50,000 increase to me. I just have a regular C6 Z06 and although some can milk them for more, the best I could do with it was 11.47 / 126. A better driver could definately wring another .04-.05 out of it. From a roll though, even an inferior driver would have a hard time messing up a run in a ZR1 or Z06. They are very, very tricky out of the hole but from 45-205 MPH, they are rock solid every time. BTW, where are you located?

From what I have read ZR1 are putting down another 100rwhp, while it may not be showing up as much of gain in ET on street tires due to traction, there is going to be a significant difference from a highway roll.

:haha:
A Z06's 60-130mph time is in the 7.5 - 7.8 sec range. According to your estimate, 60-75mph and 75-130mph would each take about the same amount of time (3.5 - 4 sec) in order to fall within that range.

Realistically, 75-130mph is probably around 6.5 - 7.0 sec.

Based on GM's advertised 0-60 of 3.6 seconds; If they run 11.2 in the 1/4 with a trap speed of 129, then one could subtract 3.6 (0-60) from 11.2 (0-129) and come up with 7.6, which confirms your estimated lapse time between 60-130. My estimate is from 75-130 and my car is no longer stock so yeah, although it feels lightning quick the stock stats don't lie. I bump it to 6 / upper 5 second range flat and confirm it Saturday. You really need to drive a Z06 or ZR1 to fully appreciate what they are capable of. I don't know of much on 4 wheels that will take a ZR1 from a roll. Alex's truck is the exception, not the norm, but kudo's to him for being out front in the end.

just take it to the track and get validated #s. No one cares about theoretical numbers requiring perfect conditions under ideal circumstances. Your car is only as fast as you can drive it.

I concur.. seeing as both t-bone and qbnkiller are skinny mofos their times should be great! :D

The time range of 7.5 - 7.8 is not an estimate; it's been proven for the Z06.

I've driven a C6 Z06 multiple times, so I know what it's capable of. I've also driven a 950hp/1100tq C5 vette more times than I can remember. ;)

Can't put it better than Mike did right there. I'll let a kitten out of the bag by stating I can talk from first hand experience. A new ZR1 is not as easy to drive as a Z06. It is more than a "mash it and go" car. In order for it to reach its full potential, you need to know how to drive the car.

I saw Alex's truck preform and saw his time slips. I have no doubt he waxed the ZR1 at speed and if I were a betting man, my money would be on his Ty. In order to understand how to drive the ZR1, the car needs to be on a track with timers so you can see what you did (more specifically what you did wrong) and what the car wants and doesn't want. It's a fantastic car in the hands of an experienced driver... BUT the driver needs to be experienced with a ZR1. Even if a Z06 owner gets into a ZR1, it's not good enough.

Lastly, Alex has more to come in his top end pull. Once he changes a few things, his truck will respond nicely and be even more impressive. Waiting patiently to see future results.

If you watch towards the end of the run, you can see how I catch him after he left 8-10 car lengths before I did. The diesel ran an 11.56 on that pass and I was all up his ass by the end of the track. I dont want to beat a dead horse, but I feel it is relevant to what others have said. This was with a relatively anemic launch (1.63 60') and 23# of boost. I have run it up to 28# on the dyno, but I have yet to let that fly on the track.

As I wrote earlier, the ZR1 in the right hands is a terrible weapon (read: fantastic, terrific). Maybe this buy wasnt to the wood with the gas pedal. Maybe he didnt know how to drive it. Maybe he was afraid of the vehicle. Who knows...it doesnt matter. He hit it, I hit it, I pulled away and lifted. The end. Thumbsup for a nice car (it really is a sweet ride) and throwing me a roll race. Hell - I had to pull over and have a cup of coffee to relax a little afterwards.....

Those of you who have ridden in my Ty know it has enough to get it done. I find it hillarious that some people dismiss the potency of a combination as simple as this...but since there is no video, it never happened...
