Down pipe question

Okay so I have a newly bought sy (#512) and am wanting to do some slight modding. Now I think a read somewhere that when you go to an aftermarket down pipe you have to get a aftermarket bov. Is that true? And why? And what does everyone do for down pipes? Also I believe that I read in stock form that if you remove the cat it will damage the turbo? Why is that? And lastly I know these turbos are small but I feel like they shouldn't be as quiet is mine is idk if it's because it's all stock or.not lol

If someone could could explane some of this to me that would be awsome

Thanks, Jordan

Re: Down pipe question

You have got a few crossed wires there so here goes...

Not true. Do you mean wastegate? We don't have BOV on our trucks. If you reduce the back pressure on the turbo, it can spool higher and overboost so you might want to adjust your tuning accordingly to avoid boost spikes and deal with fuel issues.

And what does everyone do for down pipes?

Lots of options but you'll need the correct flange to mate with the turbo. RPM, Sportmachines, or just a fab shop. Often they come up for sale on here as well.

Also I believe that I read in stock form that if you remove the cat it will damage the turbo? Why is that?

This is the same as your first question. You'll only damage the turbo if you really overdo it - you're more likely to have a lean condition and blow the motor or have it drive like poo because it is pulling timing and preventing overboost conditions.

And lastly I know these turbos are small but I feel like they shouldn't be as quiet is mine is idk if it's because it's all stock or.not lol

It's a small turbo so if it's whining, you have a problem. If you take off the air box, you might hear it more.

Now.. :2cents:

We all want to go faster but do it the right way. None of your mods will be worth a damn unless the chip is set up right. You need to tune it or have someone do it for you. You also need fuel and the ability to read whatever boost you are running.

I think that a new DP should be waaaaaaay down your list of priorities. Get a wideband O2, get some tuning and datalogging software, upgrade your pump and do a full tune up - wires, plugs etc., get a Racetronix kit. You can do all of those and not mess with your tune. You've just got it. Don't be like many others that want to go fast, buy a tonne of stuff and then can't deal with it and it never runs right.

Then you can start adjusting tables and getting a feel for it. Putting on a new DP and pulling the cat will instantly mean you need to change boost tables and cause you headaches.

HTH.
