I know it wouldnt be a common practice
Actually its very common as in just about %100 of the time.
but how much could you expect to pay to have a vehicle wetsanded after a new paint job
Ive never seen a body shop that charged extra for wet sanding as its a part of the quote when they paint a vehicle. The only ppl I can think of that would charge extra is someone like maacco or other bottom feeder type operation.
(does it enhance the finish that drastically??))
That depends on how orange peely or nibby the paint was to begin with. If the painter wasnt hung over and laid down a nice slick finish coat then wet sanding will only make a nice paint job super nice. If the paint was crappy then a LOT of wet sanding will make the paint look very nice.
And is it meant to be done after a fresh paint job or is there a period of time you should wait??
Depends... If the paint was cured in a heated booth then it can be wet sanded just about immediately. If it was just allowed to cure on its own out of the sun then it may stay soft for a few days or even weeks.
FYI wet sanding is not an "extra" operation when it comes to painting a car its a part of the job just like priming and block sanding. Ive been in/around the body shop business since the early 90s and have only personally witnessed one paint job that came out slick enough that no wet sanding was needed. IMO that was a freak of nature, the planets were aligned just right, or devine intervention nothing less.
However.....are you asking how much it would cost to wet sand/buff a car that the paint job is less than smooth and the paint work was performed previously? If so it could be anywhere from $150 for a quick scuff n buff to ~$500 for someone to take a lot of time to wet sand out severe flaws/orange peel then buff it out. IMO if the paint is good but not quite shiney enough for you is to see if any of the body men you know wanna wet sand/buff the vehicle for ~$100 cash on the side.
