difficult question

i have a sonoma gt
and for the last couple months ive been playing with the idea of removing the
ground effects for a few reasons. first being that none of them line up anymore and
need to be severly adjusted. second being there is a large amount of rust on my truck
around the edges of the effects. there is a lot of rust that i am going to slowly be taking care of as i get the money for it. the role pan doesnt line up. the whole bed is shifted towards the driverside about a half inch. front bumper/bumper cover are pushed in making the whole front end line off goofy.

my question is what some fellow syty guys would think if the ground effects were removed and a different front bumper and a better fitting role pan where put on my gt?

Re: difficult question

well, my ty had a standard s-series black front bumper for a few years cause the original was smashed... it actually looked alright... But, if you're going to do it, take it all off... partial cladding looks even worse than messed up complete cladding

Re: difficult question

if i do change the cladding i would remove all of it and get a different front bumper and new role pan

Re: difficult question

oooooo...such a tuff question.......I love the look of the GT ground effects, but I understand what you mean about some not fitting right and they are hella expensive to fix/replace..my front bumper doesn't line up all that great...but I took the inner bumper off and beat on it abit and it fits ALOT better now. Me personally..before I go removing all the ground effects I would play around with them as much as possible on the truck trying to get em to fit even though it is a royal pain in the ass. But its up to you. Its your truck and you can do what you want with it. Best of luck with your decision.

Re: difficult question

If you have the means to park the truck for a while, and do all the body work (rust..) then I would advise that. Because if you DD it its only going to get worse with the cladding off, and even more so if it takes you forever to get the body work done. :2cents:

Re: difficult question

Take it all off and sell to me!!!
Seriously, take it off and put salvage yard bumpers on both front and back until you get all the rust repaired. It won't look so great but it will be decent. If your cladding isn't broken anywhere then they'll be perfect for installation once you finish the truck and you'll have something to be proud of. If you leave the cladding all on then you risk the chance of making them even worse. Trust me and just about anyone here when we say that you DON'T want to have to search for replacements.

Re: difficult question

the two other things i thought of today that i forgot to mention are that i now have dual exhaust straight out the back so i have no need for the groove in the rear passanger piece and the guy that owned it before me cut into the role pan to fit a hitch on it. so if i do leave them on i need both of those spots taken care of

Re: difficult question

That exhaust cutout corner piece is a highly sought-after commodity. Syclone's had no such cutout, so you may want to look into getting a piece of Syclone cladding to replace that and offer your current piece up to the board. At far as the rollpan, repairing it may be possible. Pics would help on that call.

totally different piece

the guy that owned it before me cut into the role pan to fit a hitch on it.

got pics as i am looking at making a hidden hitch set up on my truck as we speak - need it for a bike rack.

Re: difficult question

i didnt get the chance to take any new pics
but this spring i will most definitely get some up when i start working on the body
i will be looking for a solid rust free box in the near future if anyone knows of any

Dah - I do - i just fell into idiot mode

i do
any idea on how much a rust free box would go for these days
or possibly a rust free motorless part truck that i could pick away at when needed?

Re: difficult question

about 400 for the box and the rest is what you perceive as a good deal. The doors alone if they are oem GM should be at least 100 each.

Re: difficult question

well ive got a passanger door to work on over the winter already because the one on my truck has a fat lip and a guy in my neighborhood has a motorless s10 sitting in his driveway but i dont know the guy and he doesnt have a for sale sign in it so ive been hesitant to see if i could talk him into parting with it
even tho before i bought the gt i looked at the same truck when it had a 305 still in it
but he has apparently now removed it for his othe s10 project
