ok
im all ears.... its a thinkpad 760. Wont boot up. hd doesnt spin, take hd out, put back in nada. Wont boot from floppy either!!! voltage on cmos batteries is good. i can tell you that one time it failed i got pissed and dropped it from knee height to the ground and that made it work... no shit really!.

So i figure something might be loose so ii took it completely apart. Looks like boards stack on one another. i havent put it back into the case yet but i wonder if maybe just one of the boards wasnt totally seated.

So what should i be checking for.

ed,

in all honesty, 80% of the problems with laptops, is improperly seated boards, or screws (most screws are ground screws), so put it back together make sure everything is tight.. make sure all screws are in place (look for ones that connect to the metal "shell" around the computer boards, those are the most important)

by it not booting, sounds more like a battery problem, either the batteries arent holding a change, or the charge they do have isnt getting to the computer itself.. therefor, try starting it up with batteries in and pluged in to a outlet.. if that doesnt work.. then try taking batteries out and pluging into outlet, im not REALLY familar with ibms.. but they cant be THAT much different then all the dell/toshiba/gateway ive worked on..

yeah i tried it with and without the operating battery in/out plugged into ac

maybe i get this put back together and save a few bucks...

got a similar problem going on with my IBM laptop 760ELD.

I noticed that the AC charger was cracked at the end that goes into the laptop. When I initially plugged it in to charge up the battery, nothing happened, so I wiggled the plug a bit and it started to charge.

I left the house with it having about 90% charged, got in the truck and tried to power it up and nothing happened.

I tried plugging it back in today, with battery and without, and nothing. Won't charge, won't do anything.

Is it toast?

only thing i could say so far would be to sit in your favorite chair, drop laptop to floor, see if it works! If not try again a few times, if that dont do it....well i dont no the answer yet till i get mine back together. but like i said dropping it once did work for me... bet you dont find this fix in an ibm tech manual. lol :D

I don't have much knowledge about laptops/computers so I couldn't say what might have happened.

since the end that plugs into the laptop was cracked/loose, I wonder if some kind of short or voltage spike or something caused it to fail.

I don't know. I'd like to wait and see if anyone knows what could have happened, before I resort to the brutal method.

my advice: DONT DROP LAPTOPS FROM HEIGHTS

basically, my suggestion for your laptop would be to get a new ac adapter or try to fix yours in some way, might require some soldering.. batteries tend to die after a period of time.. might want to check ebay for replacement ones.. if the laptop isnt getting any power, then it has to be either the battery/ac adapter/or internal power supply (converts ac to dc)

if you don't want to bother with all of this, Id say you could mail it to me, ill see what I can do, and i will ship it back (I know this is sketchy since you don't really know me)

eitherway, let me know if there is anything I can help with.. you can im me to ask questions if you want.. "njcfm"

good luck.

I appreciate your offer. Found some power cords on ebay, ranging from 15-20.

I wouldn't mind spending the 15-20 to get a new cord, another 10 for a battery, but I'm still wondering why the laptop wouldn't power up after I took it off the charger with it 90% charged.

Do you think that a bad cord could ruin a Li-Ion battery?, because the battery was fine until this problem with the power cord happened.

I'll probably get the cord/battery off ebay, and go from there.

thanks,

all the cord does is supply a voltage.. once its a cord (past teh converter/inverter) it cant harm the battery or the laptop.. the laptop is MADE to get that voltage, from a broken cord or not and so is the battery..

just because a cord is broken doesnt mean it can "spike" electricity more than it was putting out in the first place.. and no power should run if both positve and negative arent functional..

hrm.. unforunately im not really familar with ibm laptops.. or id go more into detail, im kinda just guessing at general possible solutions

igm, gateway, dell, whatever these things are probly all made in the same sweatshop in taiwan anyway. probly just change the numbers on the boards and pick a different plastic case to put the guts in ....

dont mind me im just ranting here...

Since there was a loose connection in the cord, and by moving it around in the socket of the laptop, got it to work for a few minutes....watched it charge the laptop from say 80% to 90% then unplugged it and when I went to turn the power on to the laptop....nothing. Tried plugging it in agian, moving the cord around, it wouldn't charge agian. The damaged cord had to harm whatever the laptop uses / chooses for its power source (ie. battery or A/C) ... seeing as it won't power up with either one.

I don't know, like I said, I have no experience with computers, but I assume they would be sensitive to any type of voltage problem.

If the wires or whatever became shorted in the end that plugs into the laptop, I would think that could do something to the power supply...that converts the AC-DC.

later,
Scott
