Data errors in datamaster: FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was nice driving around tonight with no errors - I got to look at other fields on the datamaster for once LOL.

ok sorry for the delay. school stuff has really got me bogged down.

anyways, I decided that I would run two new wires like Dig suggested. I ran a new wire from A9 (serial data line, original is orange) of the ecm to the ALDL serial line location. I could not find any shielded wire like Dig suggested, so I just used regular wire. I found the ecm connector ends and the ALDL connector ends at Pep Boys of all places.

I also ran a new wire from the ground port of the ALDL to B9 on the ecm. This is the location that some people are using to ground their wideband output signal, but I have mine grounded to the ecm case.

The wires that I poped out of the ALDL connector are taped up so they don't get in the way and interfere with something else. Same goes for the original orange serial data wire that I popped out of the ecm.

You will need a very small and thin straight slot screw driver to release the connectors from their respective housings. (both ALDL and ecm)

The wire ends for the ALDL and ECM that I found at Pep Boys do not have to be soldered, just crimped. We soldered the first one, but it was too fat to fit in the ecm connector, so I cut it off and just crimped one on and they work perfectly.


So to recap---A new serial data line from A9 of ECM to ALDL serial line location and a new ground wire from B9 of ECM to ALDL ground location. Both of these new 'links' were connected using the ALDL and ECM connector ends found at PEP BOYS. Now these wires do not have to wind and twist and go wherever in the wiring harness before they reach the ALDL terminal.

Tyler and I went and drove it with datamaster right after I get everything back together and there were ZERO data errors. We did WOT and still no errors. The truck used to get so many that it would lose the connection when we were making runs. This solved the problem for me, but I am not guranteeing it will work for everybody. But it is worth a shot since it is rather simple to do. If anyone has any questions, just ask. :D

good job, thanks for letting everyone in on what worked for you. ill be doing the same probably this fall.

on another note... we're learning about oscilliscopes in class now and i was wondering if you could tap in and see if there was "noise" on the aldl line. i dont know what is sent in the aldl line, im just curious- maybe dig would have an idea..

yeah that would be a great idea. Unfortunately, I know nothing about 'scopes or what would be considered 'noise' in the line. FYI, my truck does have the speaker whine that everyone gripes about. I guess not having the serial data line and the ground run through the wiring harness with all the other wires kept the noise out of them.

Shielded wire would be best, but I could not find any around here. Every where I asked, they looked at me like I had 2 heads. :roll:

I will get the packaging from the connectors from Pep Boys and post the part numbers for the ALDL connector ends and the ECM connector ends.

One of the best sources of shielded wire that is readily available is RCA cables.
If you want to go crazy regular COAX cables are overkill.

Use the inner conductor for the signal wire and ground one or both ends of the outer wire to the chassis and you have instant anti - EMI/RMI wires.

Remember that you dont have to do this for the ground wires and this is for low voltage, low amperage applications.
