Cryo treating

I was doing some research, and asking questions here and there between the people that I know. Seems this is a popular and proven thing to do on cranks, rods, pistons, cams, ext. I know they do it to some $$$$ drive shafts that are for super high hp motors/cars. Like pro stock and some monster trucks. Its done in trans, and other internal parts that are prone to breaking.

The question here is, if cryo treating a part makes it stronger and makes it less prone to cracking. Would it work on a block? (I'm talking a deep cryo treatment here, like -300+ degrees)

Re: Cryo treating

When I was doing my bow tie build many years ago... I had the cank/rods cryo treated.

For other stuff Micronite is a new process making peices stronger.

Not sure what all they can treat at this point but it's somthing to investigate.

Check with your machiene shop to see if they want the treatment done before or after machiene work.

Yes it will work on a block. I would have the machine work done last if you are thinking of doing this. Just in case the cylinders distort a little. You also need to grind off any slag material located at the rear of the block in the oil valley. Some of the slag pieces broke off on my block and made there way into the oil passages.

Re: Cryo treating

Now how much stronger would you say it makes stuff, like the block for example? I've read they claim around another 10-15% in strength on normal parts with the deep cryo. Per the cost in the links above, $400 to have a block done might not be worth being able to only support/hold another 75hp idk..

I guess this question would really have to have a lot of research err money dumped into it to answer huh.

Angel Sword uses a patented thermal cycle process 300 degrees below zero. They want to do a write up on my truck to see how well it holds up. All the tranny parts have been cryoed as well. My goals are high 9's with this RPM stock block. We all know easier said then done, right?. This will tell me if the cryo was worth it.

If my math is right for a 3200lbs. truck (w/driver) I will need to make around 625 rwhp.

There's another fast truck in Gtown owned by Al...The truck is built to run 9s. If he ever gets it running. His truck will be making the most power in the Austin area but I will be the lightest;).
