Crankshaft

Got the news today, crank is toast unless I want to weld it. Right now I don't think so as it would still be -.020 on the mains. Sent a couple of PM's (One already replied, negative) so looking for offers to sell a good crank if you have one.

Apparently there are different cranks for our engines depending on what plant they came from and if they're "light" or "heavy." What I don't know is if one is better than the other.

Shipping to 95403

Thanks.

Re: Crankshaft

I have one Don that I would send to you for just the cost of shipping. Let me double check when I get home tonight on what the journal sizes are to see if it has been turned or not.
I've had it for so long I don't remember why I still have it.

Re: Crankshaft

I measured 2.246 on the rods & the smallest main was the rear at 2.4435.
There is some slight surface rust. I had it bagged and lubed, but it looks like the lube dried out and some surface rust started.

I'm not sure what the stock journal sizes are so check with the builder & let me know.
I pretty sure it's good, so I would be willing to ship it to you & if it checks out OK, you could then reimburse me for the shipping.

Let me know if it has a hole in the front journal if you would please. PM sent also.

Thanks,

Re: Crankshaft

My local machine shop I use pulled one out of their ass the day I asked for one. It had never been ground but did need it. They gave me everything for $175. I'd check around if anything else falls through.

Re: Crankshaft

Those specs are stock diameter. Well, maybe .001 under. If there is no big hole in the rfont journal, it is a 'heavy' crank, which is what you want.

The weight is not a big deal, as it pertains to piston weight. My experience is that the TRW piston is about in the middle of the two 'weights'. So it requires re-balance either way. And, a subject for investigation: There is no way to perfectly "0-balance" a V6. So any balance strategy is a compromise.

see this post for crank information. Maybe print it out for your machinist.

But looks like you found a crank. Be sure to have it magnafluxed.

Dave

Thanks Dave, here's the link to the info referenced above which includes the pictures in case someone wants to bring it over and make it a sticky somewhere.

Re: Crankshaft

I checked and it does have the counterbore hole in the front journal. :(

Well, if you can't find one this one is available for you. And shipping to you is less than $13.

Don, thanks for posting this link, the pictures add alot to the story. We use to have one of those high output, VIN "B" (LU2) Astro van in 91, That thing really like to rev and pull really hard. I wonder why they said not to use that cam in anything. I could never find the specs on the cam other than it had.403 intake lift and .414 exhaust lift. When the muffler went bad at 130,000 miles I put a Dynomax Super Turbo on it and people would ask if I had done a V8 swap because it sounded like a Z-28.

Re: Crankshaft

No problem.

OK, back to square one, so-to-speak. Looking for a crank but since 4C Fed apparently has a "light" crank my question is why can't I use it? Has anyone actually broke or had trouble with a "light" crank? Are they different in some other way I don't know about?

Anyway keep me in mind and LMK.

Thanks,

Re: Crankshaft

The strength is the same. It's the balancing to the pistons. There are two piston weights: 745 gr, and 675 gr. The "light or heavy" nomenclature refers to the weight of the piston used with it.

I spent some time looking for my balance tag this morning to get the weight of my TRW's for you, but couldn't find it. I want to say they were about 710gr. I remember they were about in the middle.

There's no reason you can't use a light crank. Matter of fact, if the pistons you select are closer to 675 grams than 745 grams, you're better off with the light crank anyway. Less work to do to re-balance. Especially if you go for 50/50 balance. (Stock is 46% bob weight). I would entertain the idea of, and research this, if I were going to be using solid engine mounts. Might be less 'shake' transmitted to the frame with a 50/50 balance.

I also have a standard-size light-weight L35 crank. Needs to be ground, but certainly usable. Same price: Shipping-only. But I'm in Los Angeles.

Dave, If I can pick your brain, Here the Questions. If you want the engine to rev faster, Don't you want the light crank and pistons ? At what point do you want the heavy stuff ?

Re: Crankshaft

Don, I got the crank boxed tonight. I just need to seal the box up.
I couldn't find the old crank box I had, so I had to reuse a box & add extra supports inside.
This bumped the weight up to ~46 lbs.
Even so, it will still only cost $18 to ship to the machine shop.
