cold start ?'s

My wifes 92 ty is having a few cold start idling issues.I ordered a chip from waller got it put it in runs worse with his chip then the kenny bell chip that was in it.Tried calling john been a week hasn't callled me back.I put his chip in it idles a 2000-2500 check engine light is on costant ,try to throttle it it almost shuts off.So gave up with it.Put kenny bell chip back in runs fine no check engine light at all.But when you first start it in the morning it is a stubborn pig.I let it run a good 2-3 minutes before even put it in gear.As soon as you put it in gear it dies out.Restarts no problem, but you have to 2 foot it till you get her to the road then 2 foot it in to drive. After this it runs awesome....Until i hear from john i have to use this chip and get thre idle issue at cold start fixed.I checked all the vaccum lines fuel pressure, sprayed for leaks, cleaned the throttle body.My next step is cleaning iac.Plugs wires cap rotor all new, replaced vaccum lines that looked iffy.Is it a timing issue or something i am over looking...if so where do i check the timing part and what do i set it at...

Re: cold start ?'s

It sounds like you could use some basic advice. I would start here: http://www.powertuneplus.com/syclone/howto_stock13s.shtm Is your truck stock? Does it have stock injectors? Get it on a scan tool like I talk about on my website and see if the STerms are reading rich (red) or lean (green) before it dies. Do you have a stock chip you can go back to? The Waller chip sounds like it runs so badly that maybe it was a bad burn and putting it into limp home mode. Does your scan tool show his PROM ID or does it have DTC errors? I wrote How-To's for all this stuff on my website so help yourself to them.. :)

Re: cold start ?'s

what code is it tripping? did you get a chip to match your injectors? since the kb chip diables the knock retard maybe its a code for your knock sensor?

Re: cold start ?'s

i will start with the web site and basics first.I think they are stock injectors they are red tops on them ,i had a number off one but i will get it again to confirm this.will have to get something to scan it.i tried using a paper clip but it didn't do crud...so i will have to borrow scanner from work and see what its throwing in the computer..

Re: cold start ?'s

stock injectors have red tops and make allot of noise... sounds like a sewing machine and the common person would confuse this with valve train noise

Re: cold start ?'s

i pulled codes with paper clip today it has a code 43 which i beleive is iac, according to all data.I looked at it looks like it is fairly new so i am going to clean it and see what it does.

I have one other question tho truck has a kenne bell cold air and front mount on it.I was looking at the cold air and it has 2 pcv,yes 2 one is coming out of a tee on passenger valve cover going to the intake the other is off that same tee going to the air cleaner. Then there is a 1/2 hose going from the air cleaner to the passenger valve cover.I am lost as to why 2 pcv's Ther is all sorts of things on this truck that look odd to me and why they are not hooked up where to start is the question...

Re: cold start ?'s

also it looks like someone was playing with the throttle plate screw is there a basic place it should start to be or something.Cause I know on my gn there is a basic start point....

Re: cold start ?'s

its suppose to be capped. i think one of the guys with a stock truck could give you an accurate measurement on the gap for the ear to the set screw. i would think you could get it going by watching idle counts and a vacum guage

theat would be great,i see there is a torques head in there and just need a good starting point so i can begin to establish whats up with it.

code 43 looks like the knock sensor

You should have two pcv's on the pas side valve cover on a rubber u thing. One goes to the throttle body and the other goes to your air box or air intake setup.

it gives me check engine light a at idle with the kennebell chip but if give it gas it goes off,so how would knock sensor cause this ?

well kb chips are commonly known as Kaboom chips because they disable the knock sensor so basically the ecm doesn't know when the engine is knocking and can't atempt to retard timing to help prevent engine damage.

I would honestly try to locate on here a syty owner who would be willing to allow you to swap in his stock ecm to see if you still have the same issues.. and also remember when you swap the chips your doing with the battery cables disconnected which means the first startup the ecm is actually relearning everything. i'd unplug the ecm b fuse for a few minutes, plug it back in and start her up, let it idle for a bit then shut her down start her back up and take it for a short none boosted drive around and see if the error code pops back up or not.

just some ideas

That's exactly what mine did when I first got my truck. It ended up being a vacuum leak.

But it could be many more things of course. Just one thing to look for.

Re: cold start ?'s

when is wapped chips i turned the battery turn off to oof then swapped chips. Is this ok or do i have to disconnect it all the way.I have checked every vaccum line if it looked iffy i replaced it,checked all the vaccum routing, the only one i still ? is why 2 pcv's for the air intake.i can post a pic if you guys want to seewhat a mess this intake is as far as i'm concerned.....

Re: cold start ?'s

well checked ting it was retarded 4 degree;s ,code setin com puter was code 44 refering to 02 lean replaced that and timed it to 0 with tan and black diconnected.also found vac leak at intake to refence fuel pressure regulator and map so well see....
