Cobra kill coming soon to a street near you...er wait, near me.

Blow Me?
Saturday I walked outside to see I had a new neighbor with a GSXR 1000, great, a new riding buddy. But that's not all, he also has a Cobra with a pulley kit, perfect, now I can kill a Cobra anytime I want!

I went out and introduced myself hoping to get a race, he says I can have one anytime I want. It was hard to keep from laughing out loud during our conversation, I was just trying hard not to let on what I really knew. Not to be a dishonest guy, but he didn't ask the right questions and I wasn't giving away any information, this will just make it all funnier to him once it's over and will be good laughs with the new neighbor. The conversation went something like this.

me: Nice Mustang. That's one of those special models right?
him: Yep, a Cobra.
me: Fast?
him: Yes, I put a smaller pulley on it which raises the boost around 13lbs or so.
me: I love to see fast cars, I know it might not be much of a race but I'd love to see what my Syclone could do against your Cobra some day. (I didn't specificially say it wouldn't be much of a race because I'd walk away from him...)
him: Those Syclones are pretty quick too aren't they? They're super-charged right?
me: Turbo'd but still, a turbo V6 isn't exactly a supercharged V8.
him: Yeah, still probably enough to beat a few hondas though eh?
me: Yep, shoot, I bet I could take out a few Mustangs even.
him: Must be a bitch to get traction with a pickup and rear wheel drive (I didn't bother to mention the AWD here). Are those drag radials?
me: Yeah, traction is an issue and those help a bit.

I'm getting the TC re-stalled in a week or so and will wait until then for the kill. Should beat a few Hondas, damn is he going to feel silly :D

I've seen plenty SC Cobras run 13's. What's your point?

Oh yeah, he mentioned he's run a 13.1, never asked what I've run.

It's not so much that it'll be a close race and I'll have fun, just be a good to give the new neighbor a hard time.

You're right about that 11.59 number though, the strip opens in a month and you can bet i'll be doing what I can to break into the 10's sometime this summer. Who knows if it will really happen or not but a guy can dream. I wonder how much time an Alky kit will shave?

Although, have you seriously seen a lot of Cobras with just a pulley kit running better than 11.5s?

It seems as though every time i'm at the track, I get lined up next to a 03/04 cobra. I usually wax them to the eighth, then let out and still beat them to the 1/4 marker. It makes me feel good b/c more often than not, the driver acts like his shit doesnt stink. They seem to trap around 114-118 range with the usual bolt ons. Just get a good launch on him and he'll have his hands full.

I work at an Industirial Plaza(30 bussiness's around) and there are like high HP vehichles every other parking space....Lightning,Cobras,SVT's,SSR's,AMG Benz,SC Vettes etc, etc.
Have I been kidding myself to think I could walk on some of these ??Isn't the stock 1/4 a 13.40 ?(mine is stock)I guess I need to subscribe to some car mags and tune back in to whats getting built these days huh ?lol.

Now I see why these guys harrass me when we leave the parking lot on Friday afternoons. They're achin' fo some Syclone smackdown.
Looks like its time to spend some money and "pop the clones cherry"lol Don't wanna' be a bad representation for the clan.

No need to throw a lot of money at it. You'd be surprised at how much tuning the truck is worth. If it remains stock turbo, i'd guess that you want your max boost to be around 21psi and just start dumping in timing and fuel till you get your target a/f ratio and no/minimal knock. Of course, this is in crude terms. An efficient IC will wake the truck up too. The lower the IAT's the better. Heck my car went from hot air and alky at 19psi to intercooled 13psi without alky and ran the exact same mph with no other changes. They say that the real hp gains when adding an efficient intercooler to any turbo car is in the timing. Just goes to show you how important an efficient intercooler is. Im assuming that's how some of these stock turbo guys are ripping off surprisingly fast times.....mainly from the timing, low temps, and a/f ratio dept.

Just a pulley? i find that hard to believe thats all thats done....but who knows. The ones i've seen were never JUST the pulley.

I saw one of those sc'd cobras at the local track not too long after they came out. car only had bolt ons, running open headers, a chip, pulley, clutch, and some slicks. The car sounded good thats for sure, and id say 11.1 isnt anything to sneeze at ;)

Re: Cobra kill coming soon to a street near you...er wait, near me.

He says it's just a pulley and runs a 13.10, who can be sure though. Sure looks bone stock, no drag radials, no extra guages or anything else that I can see. He isn't full of attitude like some Cobra drivers seem to be, I just want something I can give the new neighbor a little shit about before we hop on our street bikes and go riding. We're also talking a street race here, probably to 60-80, I can't see it going a full quarter so I have that on my side.

Besides, I have Renz' shaft on my side, how could I lose?

I saw a SC Cobra with just a pully run 8.60's in the 1/8th last Friday..There was a nice modded one on slicks going low 7's @ 93 mph.

Yeah they can scoot with minimal bolt ons that's for sure. The favorite list of upgrades is a chip, pulley, and exhaust. They also like to hide their nitrous bottles good for little 50-100shots. I think NOS and NX companies make bolt on kits for them. They also have like 5 diff. blower upgrades as well. There's plenty in street trim hitting 10's with ease. One of the rustang mags did a cam swap, blower upgrade, and little bolt ons on one and ran a 10.1 @ 141 with about 4000lbs race weight and a stock bottom end.
With Mike's shaft, you will be a heavy hitter in the game.

Re: Cobra kill coming soon to a street near you...er wait, near me.

I raced a S/C Cobra a few months ago and creamed the guy. The guy driving couldnt drive to save his life. It actually belonged to passenger who used to own a SYTY and started a fight with me cause I cut out my fender for cold air. He starts to tell me his Cobra would totally kill me if he was driving so I tell him yeah and if I knew how to make bread Ild be a baker. Long story short he never did jump in the driver seat. Nice car though. He was nailing me from a roll.

Personally, I like the '03 Cobras but I think they're pigs. It takes 32 valve (4v per cyl) DOHC (four cams) and a friggin blower to run high 12's low 13's????

There is a local guy up here with a bunch of bolt-ons (I think he even did a blower swap) and he also has a good shot of spray on there. Pretty sure he's ran 11.4x's one time. Big friggin deal.
huh.gif

IMO that's not half as impressive as my father's NA '00 Camaro SS M6 with stock GM unmolested shelf parts (no power adders) running 11.8x's w/ 1.6x sixty foots on drag radials.

13.10 sounds about right with a pulley upgrade. Those cars really wake up with mods, but I heard they are a pain to launch and the shift is long on the sticks. You'll get him, especially up to 60-80 mph. Happy hunting.

the cobra performs according to the driver, not the mods, just like any other car. they have to be the easiest car to mod i've ever seen! simple things make this car fly! 600 HP is not uncommon at all in my area with a stock idle and stock sounding mufflers. people here really hide what they've got with a very quiet car. BUT getting them to launch good is a challenge!
