Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

So here's the problem sometimes truck has sputter on initial start and will run rough. Drives ok still pulls good but has sputter. Then sometimes truck runs awsome! No sputter runs as hard as my cts-v. There's no codes fp is fine the whole time when it's sputtering or not. New fuel pump with Hotwire kit, fp set at 42 line off,tt chip with 60s,66mm turbo,3 inch Dp,3 inch exhaust no cat,Alky plugs gapped at 28,SM intercooler, new billet distributor with cap and rotor,Msd digital 6, Msd coil, magnecor 10mm wires. I even disconnected the Msd box to see if that was the issue and it wasn't. Changed plugs even though they looked great. Cap and rotor look great. I can't seem to locate the issue!

Re: Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

I have the same trouble. With me it's, as best as I can tell, a very rich issue. How is it when starting from cold? Mine is fine. It's hot starts that I have an issue. Occasionally I even have to hold the pedal down to get it to go into "flood" mode. The injs have been done but that doesn't mean something isn't wrong. I also suspect my meth system. I'm gonna cap it, not just turn it off, to be sure that's not the issue. Might be glitch in the chip, I haven't written Eric. Just kinda been dealing with it. Idles smooth, considering the cam, once it sorts itself out.

Does your tach flutter at all? Mine has virtually none. That didn't happen until I replaced the ECM a while back. I got mine from NAPA. Right at $100.00 as I recall. Also ran better after that. I'd wager that after all these years our ECMs are just getting old and are not as happy as they used to be...

Re: Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

I suspect it has to do with the o2 sensor. When I redid my ty, I made a 3 inch exhaust with no muffler or cat. Aside from the crazy over boosting, my o2 cross counts were almost non existent. The over boosting was a larger issue so I concentrated on that. Some back pressure from adding a cat cured my over boosting. It also cured my o2 issue as well. I think that with a high flow exhaust and the o2 sensor being so close to the turbo the exhaust is moving so fast that the o2 sensor does not have time to get a good reading on the gasses in the exhaust. My truck had the same stuttering issues as well. I further believe this to be an issue, as I just pulled my ty out of storage and on the way home the turbo came loose from the manifold. It created a huge exhaust leak, which was preventing the o2 sensor from getting an accurate reading. In essence the same result as my previous problem. The truck would not idle and would stumble. This is all just a theory. I do know for a fact that when I had the stock exhaust and downpipe the o2 cross counts were good. With changing nothing but a three inch downpipe and three inch free flow exhaust the cross counts were almost none?

My Syclone sputtering and stalls/barely idles every time my battery disconnect is switch off with the truck running. (ie every time at the track going through tech inspection) It takes a few minutes to clear up, I am really not sure what is causing the problem.

I have no tach flutter and mine acts up either hot or cold start. Sometimes it starts fine from a overnight sitting and sometimes it will sputter. For instance this morning I started it and it was sputtering through idle. I drive about 32 miles to work so I got about 2 miles and it started to run fine the rest of my drive. After work I started it up and it idled fine for about 5 min then started sputtering a little and the drive home was fine in traffic about 1 hour and 15 min. So I'm clueless to what it could be??? Maybe I'll swap out the ecm this weekend when I install the wideband since I have a spare. I'll let you know if I get any changes.

Interesting.... well my truck will idle it won't shut off on me even in a hour and half commute while sputtering. If I open it up it will build boost and pull just with a sputter. A mechanic at work said it sounded like tps when I described the problem to him but he knows nothing about these trucks. Does the tps sound like it could be the cause??

Mine did that it was the coolant temp sensor

Yeah I'm totally pulling the little hair I have left out trying to figure this out! Mine won't die on me just sputter.

Re: Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

All the suggested things can be checked via datamaster. With trucks as touchy as these you almost have to put an eye on the numbers in order to track down the problem. Maybe the problem is these trucks......

Re: Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

FWIW Been driving the Sy a bit with meth turned off although not physically capped. Hot starts do seem a little better/easier. Fires and goes to about 1800 rpm then fairly quickly returns to 8-900. Haven't had to do a "flooded" start.

You have to hook up a laptop and see what's going on. There are several things that have to be right or these trucks run like crap. I dislike troubleshooting these things.

Re: Chasing a sputtering gremlin!

I was having the same issues, all resolved by changing the module and coil at same time. Both are on Amazon Prime for $83 shipped. The $53 Amazon distributor is working great, once I changed the module to the ACDelco.
