Broken Input Carrier/Ring Gear Assembly

I think my terminology is correct... if not please correct me.

Any ideas on a root cause for something like this?

The only thing that I can come up with is that when the bushing that rides on was replaced.. it was put in the wrong place?

The bushing that this rides in was of course nearly gone.. but it is hard to tell is that is part of the cause or some of the effect.. the output shaft was unscathed from this incidentally.. popped off the snap ring and it slid right out.

nick,
that is your reaction carrier shaft.
were the splines damaged on the rear planetary?
i'd say that the shaft broke first which then took out the bushing and splines.
what were you doing that caused this? hard neutral to drive engagement? boost launch?
now you can upgrade to the newer style reaction shaft that eliminates the thrust washer and replaces it with a bearing. and you might as well upgrade the rest of your tranny while you are at it.
was this trans stock?

nick,
now that i looked at those pics again, you do have the updated reaction shaft, right? along with the 5 gear planetary. it's been a while since i seen one.
didn't you buy a hartman kit?
you were recommending him, now that i think about it.
i'm not saying that it's hartman's fault it broke, but for the money you probably spent, i'm guessing it's a little frustrating. do yourself a favor and buy the parts from a vendor that doesn't charge 3 times as much for the same part.
i'm still curious as to how the shaft broke.

Exactly what I am not trying to start is a vendor bashing.. so I appreciate your input on the problem, but if this is going to turn into a "you got ripped off by Brian Hartman" post, please stop and please don't worry about "the money I have spent"

It is surely not about the money, I am looking for a root cause here so when I put it together I can limit the chances of this happening again.

I have the updated one with the bearing, I have the 5 gear planetary...

I have made about 5 WOT passes on the tranny, 1 from a dead stop.. I had a VERY hard 3-4 shift. I am assuming this is when this broke.

I've seen this happen in 3 trannies, and all were bc of neutral drops. other than that I'd say it's pure hp. you might want to consider cryo treating them from now on. but I think BH does that already. very hard shifts can also do that type of damage.

I can ASSURE I did not do a neutral drop... of course.

I like the idea of he being "PURE HP"....

These were cryo treated by BH.

I am wonding if my "hard shift" was actually a loss of pressure then a sudden .. SLAM... kind of like neutral drop that actually caused this to happen.

When it actually stopped working.. was about two weeks after the "hard shift" I was driving and it shifted into second.. about 20 mph and just acted like I shifted it into Neutral.. no noise no nothing.

yup thats the way it happened. did you ever run it low on fluid or could the pump have sucked air? this could cause the press drop and then a surge.

Well, I just had rebuilt it.. been checking on the fluid, etc... it was fine the last few times I check it.

This was the first time I got on it....

I think you hit it on the head.... probably what happened.

I checked it every time when I took it out.

Not sure though.. sounds like the most logical explanation.

nick,
if you were low on fluid, i would imagine your trans would have cut off from a dead stop when fluid slosh is more likely. not during a 3-4 shift.
maybe you have another problem?
it could be that the reaction shaft was just faulty. i've heard of a few other people breaking cryoed parts. maybe it makes the parts too hard or brittle. :-?
was there anything else wrong?
what did hartman say about it?
