broke the 4472 on the first time to the track

Well, I FINALLY got the 6 liter AWD Blazer together enough to go to the track for a baseline. I made 6 passes, with a best of 7.08 at 98mph (eighth mile)

On the 7th pass, as I was building boost getting ready to launch.....BAMMMM something let loose in the transfer case and the RPMs flared to the moon and there was no forward motion!!!

I thought I had read on here where nobody has ever had much probs with the Tcase in these things......oh well....thats why my motto is "If I cant break it, it cant be broke"

I have a spare Tcase that has a busted housing-so I should have any hard parts I will need to fix it. I am hoping to take it out and break it apart by Tuesday-I need to have it running for a dyno day this Saturday.

I will post the results of what let go inside the Tcase as soon as I get it apart.

probably broke the chain.

Thats the cheap part ;)

The viscous clutches are $599.

Re: broke the 4472 on the first time to the track

My apologies to Mr Borg Warner for bashing his Tcase before I had all the facts.....

When I pulled the Tcase out this morning I found the output shaft of the tranny twisted into. Has anyone else ever broken an output shaft on the 4l80E conversion? The splines are twisted and it looks like it was just overpowered.

I ordered a new chain and a rebuild kit for the Tcase, I guess I will go ahead and do that while it is down. I was really hoping to make it to a dyno day this coming Saturday, but it isnt going to happen now :(

We broke the thm400 trans output shaft in front of the transfer case sitting still with a load before also. Kind of unheard of but your not the 1st.

Which conversion 4L80-E outshaft did you use?

He used one of the first gen that I did that were cryo'd. Of course running 7s in the quarter can take it's toll. He's gonna do a 2nd gen cryo and if he tears that up, we're gonna do a 9310 maraging steel. It won't break. I didn't know he was gonna have a borderline 6 second truck at the time. 7.08. Guys that works out to almost 2450 HP. We will most likely be going 9310.

He stated in his first post that it was a best of 7.08 in the 1/8th mile, not quarter.

Re: broke the 4472 on the first time to the track

right, the output shafts are different, but i do believe the cases are the same. so you could build a hybrid syty transfer case that would end up being a ty transfer case. i think, if you don't want it, that is cool. just trying to help you out and get rid of it.

Re: broke the 4472 on the first time to the track

We talked on the phone about it. He can chime in but he's only running the 1/8th but it worked out to 7.08 quarter if I remember right. He had a rather large crowd gathered around his truck after the first pass.
7.08 in the 1/8 mile only works out to an 11 sec truck if I'm using the formula right. 11 seconds isn't gonna break these shafts. That's only like 590 to 640 HP. I won't give out a whole lot of what he's doing unless he wants to but it's more than that. He swears NO wheel hop and leaving with 7 pounds of boost.

Sounds like a f'd up transfercase to begin with. A 7.08 is around 11 flat.

Pretty sure Matt and Robert ect. never had a 4472 issue.

I'm throwing around some ideas now. There are two options. I'm trying to keep the product good but the price down. If you want to be a ginie pig, I can do a 9310 hybrid. I just gotta see the costs first.

Re: broke the 4472 on the first time to the track

Hmmmmmm, I can only dream this was a 7 second 1/4 mile truck. It is going to be a low 6 second 1/8th mile......that I can say with confidence. This is a 100% streetable truck with a smooth idle, working A/C, cruise control, etc etc. I estimate it to have around 600 horsepower as it sits, but with some bigger injectors and a few minor tweaks I am planning on 800 or so.

I really think the shaft was just a fluke....a freak problem (which I am an expert at finding) I am going to go thru the transfer case while it is out and make sure it is ready to go.
