Probably.

I was reminded today that when I first starting hearing the noise it sounded like the fan was hitting the shroud. Well, it was. When I did the launch the night before, the add-a-link broke the threads. Like I said earlier, the driver side motor mount was already broken. Next day I put it up on jack stands because even after I replaced the link, I heard a grinding sound coming from the inspection cover. When I took it off, I found that the flex plate was "somehow" hitting it. That was really the last time the truck was driven.

So in the end, I blame the broken chain and motor mount. That and of course, my abusive irresponsible (but fun) driving habits when I am behind the wheel of a SYTY :lol:

Weld the case up and call it a day IMO . A 12 pack and some taco bell should cover the welders needs .

I think I remember reading that the dowel pins take most of the torsional load between the motor and transmission. I agree that it was probably the broken motor mount that cracked the case.

And as far as welding up the case, it is made of cast aluminum. Cast material is a pain to weld + Aluminum is difficult to weld = Nightmare? I vote new case.

well, the dowelpins are for lign up prolly, but they also keep the transmission from rotating from the block, if the dowelpins are missing, you will get play on the bolts that hold the transmission..
if the bolts had to do that, you wouldn't even be able to get the bolts in. so missing dowelpins will result in broken stuff.. yes.

Surprisingly, it took the same amount of time to pull it as it normally does. Fluid stinks so it looks like I will definitely be checking out all the clutch packs.

We're you able to pull the tranny out with the bell housing still attached to the motor?

Yeah. I thought the crack was just onthe driver side but when I looked at it this morning it went all the way around. But what I guess I was trying to say was that the bell housing bolts were pretty much just as difficult with out the trans there as with. Also, I did indeed have all 6 bolts in there.

Nah, I'm just going to replace the motor mount and make sure I don't launch with a broken chain again. This Typhoon is nearly stock.

My 77 k-10 did this exact same thing to a th350 with little horsepower, quit launching that damn truck Mike:rotf:

Cant you find an aftermarket bell housing and beef it up?...... After you fix the mounts. I saw where "they" cut of the bell and installed a heavy duty one. 2cents

I don't see this happening again when the mounts are fixed. Mounts + the chain should = years of reliable service? The chain wasn't installed until after the mount broke so it already got some good stress. If you have the chain installed correctly with a good mount, the idea is that the chain will never allow the mount to flex far enough to ever break.
