Broke a bell housing!!

I don't know if anybody remembers but a few months ago I posted up about my wife's Ty making a funny ticking sound. At first I thought that the bearings were going out. I cut open a filter and found that it was in good shape. Then I noticed that the converter was wobbling. Well on my way home form somewhere about a month ago, the truck started puking fluid everywhere. Well today I went ahead and put it in the garage and finally got it up on jackstands only to find this

Looks like we have some work to do. :lol:

If you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all!

I am sure you will get it road worthy again.

I had a 700 split like that in one of old camaros. YOU COULD POSSIBLY TIG IT BACK TOGETHER?

Looks like somebody forgot about a bolt when taking it out or tried using a bolt to help pull it back together.

Nope. That trans was the original trans in my Ty. That thing has been through hell and back. However, the motor mount on the driver side has been broken for a while, I also do not run the T-case to bell housing brace (doubt that caused this). I chained the motor down about a year ago but I suppose that could be the culprit. It's a god thing I have two cases laying around:lol:

Good news is, we are going to take this opportunity to do the following:
Fix the trans
send converter to TCS for a rebuild/cleaning and to replace the lock clutch that hasn't worked for almost a year now
FMIC
replace broken motor mount
remove stock lower intake and fix the area where I tightened the CTS too tight and cracked the area around it.

After all of that, I this Ty will be in great shape again.

This trans had the cover installed. It was removed because the flexplate was rubbing it due to the crack I assume.


So you guys wouldn't swap cases, you would have it welded?

Mike, I say swap the case, you already have it and since the lockup didn't work maybe the trans ran a little hotter than normal. It would be a good time to look the trans internals over and fix any issues now before it becomes a major problem.

From experience, I dropped the front diff to do a reseal and found a bad carrier bearing. I also dropped the t-case to fix a leak and I found an about to come apart planetary gear set. How it lived long enough to make it to nats and home and then 3 hours to El Paso is beyond me.

Take this time to look everything over and address little issues now. Besides, you kinda live for this shit. :rotf: :2cents:

Yeah I wouldn't feel right with a welded case. Like I said I have two and going through the trans certainly doesn't scare me. I just cant wait to do the other stuff. I have been trying since we got the truck to get the wifeage to do a FMIC. She is even going to chip some cash in on it:lol: Wonder if I should just pull the motor and do solids?

I wouldn't have a problem with a welded case if it's done right. It's just that this is a good opportunity to check things out because in sytyland you just never know.

I did solids in my pos before the trip to nats and vibration was never an issue, well it did have a vibration issue but the new propshaft cured that. Now is a good time to get in on some Erue stainless motor mount frame pads for cheap $. I says do it!

I recall one of your threads in the past when you were annoyed at the top bell housing bolt was a pain to get in and out, -so you just left it out. Was that you? :dunno:

Either way I'm just busting.

IMO that crack looks like a result of the bell housing being mounted to the block and then the trans getting jacked too high from the back. -but it's a guess.

Are your motor mounts okay- did you check them?

Yeah that was probably me but it would have been a long time ago because in the last four years or so I have made it a point to put all of the bell housing bolts in. As far as it being jacked up wrong, I don't see that happening, I always take the t-case and x-member off before the trans and even then the jack is just resting under it. I think its from the RAW POWER this truck puts to the ground:lol: Actually, I noticed this odd noise the next day after I did a MEAN launch for a friend who I was driving home.

Driver side motor mount is definitely toast and has been for about a year or so. Engine was chained down shortly after the mount broke.
