Best Way to pick up my Ty

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could get my Ty from Dallas to NM. I really do not want to drive it back, but I need a few options to come up with.

I live in Alamogordo, NM now, and the drive to Dallas is about 10 hours.

I do not mind driving there and towing it back, but never towed a vehicle before.

Has anyone towed a vehicle, or know what I need to get to tow it back? I heard that you can rent trailers, but have no idea where to start to call.

I have a Dodge Durange that has the tow package on it. Will the Durango be fine to tow it back to New Mexico?

The military will only pay me a flat rate of about 460 dollars to pick up my Ty.

Here are some of my options:

1) Fly to Dallas, pay the cab ride (about 50 dollars) to go the Vehicle processing center and drive the Ty to a car carrier service and have them tow it to New Mexico for me. Go back to airport and fly back to NM This is the most expensive route and would like to avoid this if possible.

2) Fly to Dallas and pick up the Ty and drive it New Mexico. I really do not want to do this, just in case it breaks down on me, and I will probably spend more money towing, hotel and other fees.

3) Drive to Dallas in the Durango, rent some sort of Trailer and try to tow it back. I am not sure if this is an option, but if anyone has any input to make this option better, please let me know ( places to rent trailers, or some sort of towing device, or tips on tying vehicle down when towing it)


If anyone has any other options please let me know. The Military will allow me 4 days to get my vehicle from Dallas to New Mexico if I did drive it. My Ty has to be in Dallas by the 25th of Jan, and I cannot wait to get it.

Uhaul and Penske both rent car trailers that will carry a Ty. Pretty cheap too...probably less than $150 to rent one for the time you'll need it.

Your Durango can pull the Ty + trailer, just take it easy.

Who's Typhoon did you buy in Dallas??

He didn't buy one, the military is shipping his own Typhoon there from Japan.

I'd drive the Durango there and trailer it back. Thats how I got mine from TN to NY. Go to uhaul.com and you can book and reserve it at a location close by to where the Ty is. Then just drive in to uhaul first, hook up the trailer and then get the Ty. When you are in NM just drop the trailer off at nearest uhaul and your done. I think I rented the trailer for like 2-3 days, it was about 400-500 WITH insurance.

Do #3. Uhaul rents car hauler trailers, not just a dolly, for $49.99 a day. You can book a trailer in Dallas so it will be ready for you. Make sure you tell them you will be returning the trailer in NM. Best option in my book, but thats just my :2cents:

DO NOT book a trailer in another town, that costs HUGE money (from Uhall).

Go pickup a trailer (not a tow dolly!) and they will charge you 49.99/day. You'll need it for 1, maybe 2. If you do ONE WAY with the trailer it will cost you OUT THE ASS!!!!

When i towed my Ty to Wallers house (Using a GMC Yukon) I got the trailer in Chicago, and dead-headed home with it and returned it to the original location....$100. Wanna know what they wanted for a one-way rental???!!! $430!!!!! Obviously, it cost a little more than 100 due to drag on the vehicle while empty, but its a drop in the bucket.

As for your tow vehicle, it WILL stress it, but not dramatically. The Yukon even had a hard time yanking mine through the TN hills with 245hp. Also, keep in mind that the Uhall trailers a PIGS at a whopping 1600lbs and have hydraulic brakes, so you won't need a brake controller.

When I got my mustang cost me 200 to tow from Des Moines Iowa to Detroit, one way, 9 hours. Much easier this way. When I bought #409 I rented a trailer here from a local place since I only had to drive to Indiana, this costing me 60 bucks for the day.

Rent a big box truck and put the ty in the back with a flatbed tow truck, its nice and safe. plus you can go one way pretty resonable. Just dont tell them thats what you are doing.

I really hate that the system is so non-standard.

I got paid mileage for one vehicle on the way there and mileage for two vehicles on the way back. ended up being about 400 bucks, this was from
Cannon to Dallas. I had to take leave as it was not permitted to take permissive TDY to pick up a POV according to AF regs.

Your best bet is to drive a trailer there and back. You can stay over night at Dyess AFB. Its on the way and billeting is cheap so even more money saved. You should get paid using your PCS orders for picking up your car. My wife and I did this for both vehicles, we just turned in a supplemental travel voucher.

He beat me to the punch. The trailers are unlimited mileage so you're better at $50 per day than hundreds to take it one way.

Also a very good idea. And Ken is right...DO NOT TELL THEM whats goin in the box, or they won't rent it to you (tried that).

However, to load it, just bring the box truck to a moving company nearby, shoot the yard manager 10 bux to use a set of "walk boards" and drive it right in or find a dock. The tow truck idea isn't bad, though.

I agree with this as well.

When my truck had to get to McCoy's shop (575 miles away) I rented a U-haul. Told them I was using it 'Local' and would return it to them in a couple days. We hauled the Syclone down there in 12 hours, dropped it off, then turned around and came home with the empty trailer in another 10 hours. Returned it in 2 days - no problem! Also did the same thing when it came time to pick the truck up.


If they ask where you're going with the trailer, just say a couple hours away and back to move a couple cars - whatever.

First I rented a new F150 which was around $48 a day. Then I went to Wal-Mart and got a hitch to mount on the frame, since you can’t tow with a rental. :tup: I put the hitch on and then went to U-haul and got the trailer. Drove from Panama City 5 hours down to Orlando, loaded the TY up and drove back. Dropped off the trailer then removed the hitch. Took the hitch back to Wal-Mart to get my $100 back and then dropped off the truck. Not that hard. :rotf:

$50 a day at three days (or more) is $150 towards tranny wear and tear that may not happen while you own it.

Actually, it's a Dodge so go rent something. :rotf:

I had a 2000 Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T and the tranny started slipping when it only had 8k miles on the clock. Good thing it was a lease. :tup:

For me I have an SUV that was customized for road trips so I wouldn't rent but if my truck were stock I would consider it if I could find the right price.

I recently went from Fort Campbell to Colorado Springs to get a Syclone with a Chrysler Town and Country LXi (3.8 liter) minivan and used a very trick dolly I borrowed from a neighbor, dropped the rear Drive shaft on the SY and pulled it back running 65 mph and averaging 18.7 MPG over 1088 miles. You can get your Ty many ways BUT if you wanna save money (and the weight of a very heavy trailer), rent a dolly and go get your Ty. They track very nice. Use caution with a moving company tow dolly though; they swivel in the center and you can munch your rocker panel with the dolly fender if you cut too hard. The dolly tires themselves jointly turned on the one I used so the truck never was at risk.

Yes, but then you are subject to a mileage fee, and truck rental fee which will blow his budget. The Durango should be just fine.

I am partial to the trailer, not the dolly, but for 10 dollars more, you get a double axle trailer and no driveshaft removal necessary :tup:

Yeah, renting a truck to go many miles will cost to get unlimited miles or will set you back for per-mile charges.

Use your Durango (it should make it :rotf: ) and rent a full trailor. It's worth a few extra bucks to save miles on the tires and have a smoother drive and not have to worry about the cladding or dropping the shaft and all that other jazz.

I saw 1) use your truck and 2) rent a flat bed trailer locally for a few days.

Done. You save money on using your own truck and spend a little more to take better care of the Ty.
