Turning in my highschool driveway this morning i started to notice my engine was knocking slightly. Oh well, i'll adjust the timing when i get home. no biggie.

Leave school, on the way to town (about 4 miles away) it was progressively getting worse. I parked my truck and looked at it. Everything looked legit and timing was good.

Ok, I changed the oil yesterday, so I had better check the oil, might be low. Let the oil settle for about an hour and checked it, clean as can be and perfect oil level.

I wasn't sure if I could even make it home (about 15 minutes away) it was getting so bad. So I took it straight to my local chevy dealer. They looked at it and came back about 20 minutes later and said :"Yea, cylinders 4 and 6 are out, you blew a headgasket. We're gonna rape you 400 bux cuz we already took off the head. You can pick it up about midday thursday" I think 400 bux is a bit much seeing that my uncle can do it for free if i buy a new headgasket. Is 400 a fair amount?!?! Also, I have NO idea how i blew a headgasket this morning! I wasn't running it hard. Why would I? I'm never in a hurry to get to the hell-hole.(school) So now I am stuck driving my mom's car. This sucks! (82 collectors edition corvette!!!!!!) So i guess i have it better off for a few days.

stupid 178000 mile engine.

They took off the head ,and want to charge you for it? Did you tell them to take off the head??(specifically) If not i think a simple diagnostic fee is ALL you should pay!

Nothing wrong with driving a vette. Your headgasket could have been goingfora while and it just now got bad enough to notice.

Same thing happened here, except with a typhoon, and worse. Owner was away for a week. Son driving his truck, started shooting white smoke. Took it to the dealer to get a diagnosis.

1500 bucks.. we took ripped down/removed the motor (read cutting ac hoses, turbo oil lines) and the rods were bent.

Um, did I ask you to pull the motor out? NO.

This guy still paid, I wouldnt have. Try to speak intelligently withought letting yourself get frustrated. If you didnt ask them/give them permission do to whatever it takes, then take em down. total bs.

That is an excellent price for doing a head gasket, while they have it down that far, I might suggest going ahead and replace the other side also....And make damn sure they use the right head gaskets....and actually, they shouldn't have went further than a compression check/diagnostics, unless you signed a repair order, giving them permission to rheem you as they please...After checking, Price seems a little low...are they surfacing the heads for that price?

Ok, head gasket fixed. Now it's running hot!!
It's running at about 205 or maybe a little hotter. It never gets up to the caution mark, but still hot. And the thing is, it gets hot while going down the road, and cools off when I'm sitting still! That's bass-ackwards to what it should be doing, right? All fluid levels (antifreeze, oil, etc) are good and at the right level. We replaced the water pump and sending unit last time it was tuned up! What could be the reason for it running hot?. I even had the radiator dipped 3 months ago to clean it out. (inside and outside between the fins), so it's clean. I dont see any leakage anywhere. *confused* please help
