Any vette\camaro owners previous or current Ty's

I'm at a difficult decision, I love my vette but am thinking of moving to a place with snow and bad roads. The vette would definately only be a summer driver and not alot of good roads to enjoy it even in the nice weather. I think that even if I keep the vette I'll get a Ty at some point but would probably have to go with a standard Jimmy 4x4 for the first couple of winters.....But I'm thinking of just saying screw it and getting rid of the vette and buying the much Cheaper Ty....It would break my heart as the Z06 is my dream car, but I've always wanted a Ty too, and the prices are pretty reasonable now.

What are your thoughts? I know this is a Ty forum and you love your trucks but I'm trying to decide on waiting and keeping the vette driving a junker or selling the vette and getting a Ty and saving a crapload of money.....

Don't get rid of the zo6, you'll regret it man....but also don't get a ty and beat the shit out of that in the winter...you'll regret that more.

I wouldn't beat on it, it would be in a garage at night and be a driver. I will probably be looking for some time for a higher mileage Ty in really nice shape, not a collector. I'm already anal about the Z06 it only has 13K on it.

I just can't think of another vehical that I would like for a daily driver that is under 15K. I HATE the 700r4 transmissions which is one of the reasons I haven't bought one up to this point. But other than that its just an S-10 the 4.3 is no big deal, the Mitsi turbos are no big deal. The prop shafts kinda scare me and I know it will have its issues. Plus I'm talking Fairbanks Alaska, the winter roads aren't bad and its just really cold, not wet snow and windy. Just cold as hell....

Everyones got a tahoe and they are pricey for a nice one. One of the new H3's are cool but the wife doesn't like them and I can't really afford and H2.

Are Ty's not good in the snow or something???

Find a nice slightly used 2004 GTO A4, throw on some blizzacks (snow tires) and voila for $22k you have have a nice winter beater. (Keep vette)

I have a both a TY and 2000 Camaro. I use the ty as my daily driver right now, but once october rolls around i'll be looking for the $1000 beater. I really want a CJ, put a cheap lift and some nice tires for winter.

Don't get rid of the Z06, i would be driving one right now if i could afford.

don't buy a ty just to beat on:( These trucks are about as plush as they come. I've driven a few vette's in the past and know they are hella fun to drive, but the ty is a different breed. You constantly have to work on them and it's definetly a love/hate relationship.
I guess I just don't want to see another ty beaten on for no good reason.

Keep the vette. I have a 99 vert and a 93 Ty. The Ty is the bigger money pit and is more brittle. I park the vette from November to April (Chicago area) and drive the Ty and my Explorer. The Ty is pretty good in the snow (maybe 5 or 6 times last year) and is pretty reliable in the cold. The only drawback is the surface rust where the cladding rubs. I'd only get rid of the Vette for another one.

Are you guys saying this because you don't think a Ty should be subjected to snow, or because it would not be a good vehical for that application. Its either that or a 95-99 S10 4x4 blazer which really isn't all that exciting if you know what I mean.

It would be a nice higher mile Ty, I wouldn't put a low mile survivor through the winters. Rust is a good point but I could get it painted every 5 years or so...

Chicago winters are much much harsher on autos then Fairbanks. Fairbanks is just basically a big Freezer :)

SnakeEater do you use the same name on LS1tech? I'm 93TAWicked1 over there I know I've talked to a Snakeeater before!

Damn you guys got me thinking I should pick up a beater like an old K5 or Bronco...But how am I going to get the wife into letting me get a Typhoon for another summer car if I do that??????? Maybe I'll just tell her if she doesn't let me I'm going to start pestering her about a crotch rocket...that might do it

I say scrap the Vette if youre going to Alaska. But only if youre moving there permanately. Otherwise, keep the Vette.

A little bit of both, I'd say. These trucks are a lot closer to "engineer's plaything" than to "production vehicle". Many of the parts come from random other vehicles. Corvette shifter, L98 throttle body, turbo Sunbird cluster and ECM, etc. Even the most well-maintained ones seem to have quite a few problems. Mine has a ton of miles, but I consider it pretty reliable in SyTy terms - yet I've replaced the battery, alternator, water pump, AC compressor, trans (twice, since it wasn't done right the first time), front-end (steering and suspension), and my front diff is on the list of things to do. My S-10 had most of the same problems (i.e. most of the SyTy-specific stuff has held up pretty well), but that's still quite a bit of work compared to some other vehicles. They simply never had the chance to mature like other vehicles have.

They're mostly just 4X4 S-trucks, so they should be pretty similar in the snow. From experience, the AWD and high-performance tires tend to cancel each other out for winter driving. With some decent winter tires, it should drive ok.

Find/build a Braphoon. All the upsides of a SyTy with none of the guilt of trashing a rare vehicle. Depending on the build, you could even completely eliminate some of the more common SyTy inadequacies right from the start, rather than fixing them when they break...

Yeah, cold and pure precipitation aren't what hurt the vehicle, it's all the crap they use to make the roads better. However, a higher mileage vehicle will also be more likely to need more work too. Stuff simply wears out. They're getting old enough that even the low mileage ones are running into problems, because parts are rotting while it's parked. The more mileage you add on to that, the more problems you can generally expect.

Random thought... Timbo said that his Ty wasn't technically legal in AK in the winter. I'm not sure if that's because of his mods or just the performance nature of the Ty in general.

The only thing I can think of is he is using different gas then what would be available in winter, can't remember the additive they put in it. Other than that you can get summer tags and not pass emissions...At least when I used to live there..

HMM you guys have me thinking. I'm looking at 5.3 swaps into 99+ 4x4 S10's right now, then the possibility of using the 2nd gen Bravado AWD setup, although I don't know if thats as good for performance as the Sy/ty setup. I do really want a Typhoon though and may just end up getting one.. I know its going to have problems especially that dreaded 700R4. But like you said most of the problems are common to the S10's anyways. I agree there are better cars\trucks out there, but I am comfortable working on GM products and do 90% of my own work. Plus parts are cheaper and easier to find. Little crap on GM's always fail but rarely do they leave you on the side of the road....at least in my experience.

I do know if I stay in Portland, I will probably get a ty as a daily driver\(gasp) dog carier. REALLY what can you get in that price range that is THAT sweet???

Thanks for the suggestions I'm going to look into the AWD setup for the 2nd gen blazer possibilities. A LSx motor in one would be a nice dependable setup with good gas mileage.

Re: Any vette\camaro owners previous or current Ty's

Get a high mileage Ty and drive it in the winter. All the rustable parts are the same as a 1st Gen S-Series. They handle quite well in the winter with decent tires on them.

Keep the vette and get a Sy/Ty. You will be glad you have both. It will be worth the effort.
I can not get rid of my Sy or my 66 corvette coupe.

Since its just a 4.3 and the turbo is no big deal--------------I would suggest you go buy a s-10 blazer for 4K throw a turbo on it for 1K...you'll save about 10K for snow tires.

Keep the vette!!! I have both a vette and a Typhoon. Get a winter beater or save for the Ty down the road.
