almost lost a Ty in quake

long story short (i'm at work now). My house is 18 miles from epicenter. I bought a 4 post lift last year, and had typhoon on top and C5 on bottom. Luckily i sold the C5 last month and the Ty is still on lift, but I had it lowered all the way yesterday. It looks like the entire lift may have "walked" a 1/4" or so. I'm pretty sure if the ty was all the way lifted, the lift would have swayed enough it could have come down (it's not anchored to floor).

Washer, dryer, plates, pictures....all out of place. cracked interior wall, but structure is OK. dogs pissed themselves in crates, cats were FREAKED out when i got home. I guess we were close enough that even the weaker aftershocks shook the entire house (dogs pissed themselves again....me: "hey honey......clean up time again")

I also had a Formula SAE chassis on a shelf above my older corvette. Had that not been zip-tied to the shelf support, it would have definitely come down on the car.

my work, where i was, is west end of richmond. suspended ductwork swaying, beams visibly vibrating. pretty cool/nerve racking. a few folks were definitely in panic mode.

i'm also 20 miles from the Lake Anna nuclear plant. No issues there, but 1 out of 4 backup generators not working is of course of small concern.

Glad all your toys are safe, and house is relatively in one piece. It's amazing how things just being up on shelves for years can turn into a projectile during a quake. The thought of a car being up on a 2/4 post lift during a quake is kind of scary.

I would think that that amount of weight being swung like a pendulum with a vertical swing of 6 inches to a foot would do it. It wouldn't come down fast but I could sure see it buckling then slowly teetering over.

Not sure it would. I just know I can physically sway it a little but when vehicle is all the way up. Its not commercial grade.

I wasn't at home, but people that close (20 miles or less) were taking cover in rooms and grown men I know were pretty shook up about it. A 2' I beam was visibly resonating here at work. If the lift and truck had a natural resonance anywhere near what the quake was, it could have been worse.

You guys out east are probably familiar with cow tipping so visualize that as a SyTy on a 4 post lift if you will. EZ to knock over standing (from what I hear).....almost impossible if they are laying down.

I have one. They do sway when you're really getting after something, and if you did happen to get the swaying in a rhythm, I could see one getting close to coming over.

They're decent, but do have their limitations.

I highly doubt a 2.2 would cause a 4-post to topple or throw a car off it. We had a couple dozen cars on lifts at the dealership during Sylmar 1971 6.8 and nothing fell. I had engines and parts on my bench and cars on jack stands, and a 70' ocean racing sailboat on the hard during Northridge 7.1 in 1994. Nothing fell.

You're acting like pussies. After you've experienced a few 6.5+'s, come back with "almost lost a ...." And BTW. The more large (6.0+) earthquakes I experience, the scarier they become. I'm not sure why that's so. So if a 2.2 gets you all shook up, come out west where real earthquakes happen. A good 7.1 ought to make you shit yer drawers.
