AC problems?

I was able to get my AC filled the other day. Now once I turn on the AC the truck just wants to bog down and die like it doesn't have enough power to run the compressor and the engine at the same time....

Any one have any ideas? My alternator is good. I am goign to upgrade the wire from the alternator to the battery to see if that is the problem. But I still apreciate any input. Would an overpressurized system cause this sympton?

Hate to say it, but it does sound like your compressor is seizing. Did the person who put in the freon check the high and low side pressures?

I don't know. It is fine if I give it a little bit of gas at idle it doesn't want to die then. I don't hear any horrible noises coming from the compressor either.

I still get cold air through the vents.

I wonder if your IAC is functioning properly... Have you hooked up a scan tool and made sure that the ECM is aware that A/C is on and that it needs to raise the idle?

If you’re IAC is ok. Yes you can overcharge the system and that will make the compressor move liquid and make the engine bog and serge. Check your High/low pressure. Low should be between 35 and 50 psi and high on a hot day not moving down the road can be 225 to 265 give or take the high side. Did you pull a vacuum before adding new Refrigerant? Air in the lines can do funny things to the system, sometimes.

I will check my IAC and get it working correctly. Have never set it since I owned the truck. I guess now is a good time to do that. If that doesn't fix the problem, I guess I am goign to have to bite the bullet and get a tech to do AC work for me... because I don't want to break something...

So I checked up with Datamaster on my IAC readings. At idle, in park, they are at about 40. In drive they go up to 90 and when the AC kicks on they jump to 150 and the truck dies. I think I may have found the culprit, I jsut need to know a few more things, where does the IAC get its air from and what size wrench do I need to get that sucker out?

i take mine out with a crecent wrench. but i did it with the throttle body out when i cleaned up the channels the iac pulls air from. if your gonna change your iac you might as well clean up the throttle body. it pulls air from in front of the butterflys.

I replaced the IAC and cleaned the passage into teh throttle body. I went through the hole process to reset the IAC to the correct position. I put datamaster on it and the IAC is now at 14 counts with the hot idle in drive.

I went to turn on the AC and it died again.

I take it that my compressor is shot...?

hello .14 sounds kinda low like possible vacuum leak. try unplugging iac should barely idle(iac unpluged it is minimum idle).
