ABS trouble code info needed

Surprise, surprise... another thread about ABS troubles. The ABS light in sy0895 came on a few days ago. I jumped the ALDL terminals and came up with codes 14, 62, and 61 (in that order). According to my Chiltons book, 61 and 62 indicate a fault with the control unit. Code 14 isn't listed for our 4 wheel ABS systems, but it is listed for rear wheel ABS units - another code for control unit malfunction. I double checked the codes before I cleared them. A few trips around the neighborhood produced no warning lights and brakes seem to function fine, even w/ hard braking. Just curious if anyone has had these specific codes before or can provide more insight?

After searching "ABS" on this forum and reading dozens of issues/near misses/accidents with our system, I'm really considering a delete kit. I enjoy having a 96% stock vehicle so I'd like to keep the ABS, but I'd rather drive a 94% truck than crash a 96%. A lot of threads mention improved braking and holding w/ ABS deleted so it may cure my 0psi boost "creep" problem too.

My "Anti Lock" light came on the other day too.... Seriously considering the "delete" kit too... I am not having braking issues though. Someone told me that the actual pump might just have gone bad.

Which pins did you jumper to get the codes? For engine codes it's the "A" and "B" terminals. For 4WAL codes, it's the "A" and "H" terminals. Code 14 is a "Coolant sensor/High temp" engine code...

For more info on reading the codes check this out.

Re: ABS trouble code info needed

Thanks for the feedback. Sy2932, I jumped the A/H terminals. Thanks for the link - good stuff. I forget to check the "other" syty sites sometimes. The code 14 threw me, hence the questions. DaveP answered that one. So far, no codes. Hopefully just a fluke....

Re: ABS trouble code info needed

Just make one out of a bent paper clip.... this jumpering takes place down at the ALDL connector beneath the steering column.

Man I sounded like a noob.... I know how to make a jumper wire. I guess I should have asked. Where do I do it at? Which pins? Etc.
Thanks

Re: ABS trouble code info needed

Check out the link that I posted above.

Thanks.. I read it, but I think I have other issues.. Since I did the Jumper from A to H like it said... I got a code 51..

Code 51 PROM or MEM-CAL Make sure the PROM or MEM-CAL is properly installed in the ECM. Replace the PROM or MEM-CAL.

There are different trouble codes based on what system you're testing. Jumping A/B gives you engine diagnostic codes, where your code 51 explanation above came from. Jumping A/H provides ABS diagnostic codes, where code 51 means a possible problem w/ the ABS control unit. Per link, you should "Check for a loose ground connection at the motor circuit. Clear the code and drive the vehicle. If any of these codes return, the EHCU valve may be faulty."

Hope this helps. Sy2932's link explains it much better...

Re: ABS trouble code info needed

Lots of questions on this to you guys who know more about this than I do.
My ABS light has also started to come on recently too, It lights up when it does its self check is it about 8mph or something when setting off after start up. Got the softish pedal with it as well. Tried bleeding the brakes as many seem to have done before me to no avail.
It has also affected the TCC lock up, this has also been documented in searches I have done, as it supposedly shares the same fuse which is OK. The TCC sort of works, but isn't right. Sort of difficult to describe. It used to lock up properly and be very predictable. Now it seems to slip a little and where it dropped out at about 40, it now seems to not engage/disengage properly/predictably. It was fine before the ABS light started to come on. How does the ABS affect the TCC if the fuse is OK?
Can something be bypassed electrically to make the TCC work properly even though the ABS isnt working? I thought about jumpering A & F on the ALDL, but this isn't what I really meant.
I assume to check the ABS codes, you need to be stopped ignition on and engine not running before jumpering. Please someone correct me if this is not right.
I do have a diacom+. Anyone know if this can be made to read ABS codes. I cant find reference to it in the manual, just engine codes.
Searched, but can't find out if the ABS unit can be bled without a GM Tech1 unit. Anyone know how to do this. Obviously with a non functional unit I cant do the Emergency stop routine and get it to cycle itself.
Sorry for so many questions, but I have searched, didn't find what I needed to know and didn't want to start 'another ABS thread' So I've joined in this one.
Thanks All
Dave

Re: ABS trouble code info needed

DaveP,
Thanks for your reply. I had read that thread you quoted regarding the CC switch and I believe it is as it should be. The CC works fine and the CC disengages when I slightly depress the brake pedal as normal. - or am I missing something obvious here.
The bleed screws you mention on the BPMV. Do you mean the two which resemble bleed nipples? I was reluctant to loosen them, without more info, hence the post.
Thanks for the direction, I'll search again, I only came up with repeated questions and answers when I searched before, I will search again, maybe I wasn't as thorough as I could have been.
Thanks for the input
