A little OEM Rim History

Was doing some cleaning out of the many piles of notes for my Ty and found something interesting to share, little insider-info. While having some work done to another GM turbo car, I had contacted a local wheel repair company, and with the problem I was having getting the job done properly, was moved up to the owner of the company, great guy who got me taken care of in the end, who had some interesting info on the rims done for the SyTys. He use to work at Kelsey-Hays, and apparently they won the contract to do the rims for the SyTys, or just Hays after they broke off the company, not sure the exact timing, but it was Hays that did the rims. Or what might show up on some rims; WWC or Western Wheel Corp that Hays changed their name to. I think others have said this in the past, it was a 2-piece rim, with a cast center and a rolled outer area, that seemed to have caused some challenges in mating properly when assembled, and was why some new owners had problems. Those problems ran up a warranty bill of $300,000 for 93 alone. That’s all I got from this guy, but at least some interesting info on the history of our trucks.

Re: A little OEM Rim History

There is guy in town CO Colorado wheel co I think that put a new Barrel on the center. He said the same thing .A lot of the stock rim's were not mated properly. So he takes them and removes the center and put's new Barrels on. looks like a brand new rim when he's done.
He said he could put a 10 or 12' Barrel on the stock center for me if I wanted. I might do it on the Sy's rear rim's to keep it looking stock.

The problem with this is finding tires. Really wide 16" tires are few and far between. Hopefully someone proves me wrong, but at least 2 other owners here have looked and not found any.
