Changing to R134a is about the simplest mod you can do! All you are doing is changing the fitting that the A/C filler uses. You drain the system of the R12 completly and fill the new R134a. The entire kit was only $40 at WalMart of all places (that included the refridgerant).

I did it...........didn't seem to really help or hurt. Cost me about $60 after all was said and done.

hello i would not put any of the propane based "freon" in at all. i have seen pictures of what happens to the inside of cars that had an evaporator leak and something inside sparked. this is no bull. they will tell you it is safe it is not . no known ac leak detector should ever be used to check for leaks with propane. freeze 12 is what it was called here. propane and freon share the same boiling point so they are compatible in theory.
r134 is so cheap best option. i have charged my 89 f250 with r134 without doing anything to it didn't change oil or add fittings(have also done numerous other cars and trucks this way no problems). i rigged an adapter together to charge it(3 years no problems).

the right way to do it would be. recover any r12 that is still in there. vac the system for 25 to 30 minutes. change the acumulator. and filter in the line.put the right fitting on for the r-134.only put in 80% of what the r-12 was. if you put the same amount in as the r-12 called for. there is a change you could get a leak. the r-134 is more pressure than the r-12. when all said and done. check for leaks

JIMATTESON, where in WI did you get the recharge kit? we had to have a friend go to Illinois to get one since they are illegal to sell here. We converted our S-15 to R134A and it works great, and there was already oil mixed in with the coolant so all we had to do was put on a fitting and fill 'er up. We tried to fill up the Syclone, but the retard that owned it before us broke a hardline to the condensor:evil:
