Re: 95 4L80e

i thought that ratio was available in diffs from factory trucks and suvs aka junkyard.

I think Ed Hess is running a TH400 and 3.08's.....And likes it....Like his truck needs less gear ratio to work against, thereby loading the engine (and turbo) up harder.

One of the detriments to Option 4 is the cost. The cost of swapping gearsets front and rear can get to be high (especially if you include all new bearings, gears, a decent limited slip for the rear, labor to set it up right).

Then you start thinking about that weak A$$ 7.5" / 7.625" rear axle with a lousy limited slip and going "why would I want to dump money into that?". You think to yourself "I really ought to upgrade that to at least a 8.5" 10 bolt, if not something heavier duty, like a 12-bolt / 9" / Dana 60, with a decent limited slip / locker and maybe even upgraded axles (with C-clip eliminators) before I break it at the track and wreck the truck (look at Ed Hess' sig pic for an example of what happens when you break an axle when running C-clips).

I'm not going to say that putting a better axle under the truck is a bad idea nor will I say that swapping gears is impractical or super expensive. But, by the time you look at the trans and the axle swaps, you're probably spending the same money as you would have on an 80E, and you still don't have the level of streetability as you would with the 80E. But for some folks, it will be a viable option as it fills their needs the best.

They are.

However, do you really want to just slap junkyard parts of unknown origin & condition in your high dollar truck?

And, unless you step up to the somewhat rare (and therefore $$$) 8.5" 10-bolt that came in the 96 and up 4x4 S10 with the HO V6 and 5 speed manual, you're still gonna get the weak-a$$ 7.5" 10-bolt with a lousy limited slip (Eaton Gov-Lock POS, which is what comes in the 8.5" also).

And all of the factory axles use c-clips, which retains the axle in the absolute center of the differential. Which means, if you're unlucky enough to break an axle (and run drum brakes) the axle / drum / wheel / tire assembly can leave the truck, which I'm sure is quite exciting (ask Ed Hess, he's done it!). If you're running disks, they typically will act as an axle retainer (but it depends upon the design of your specific brake package).

HA! you are assuming my truck is high dollar. most of the parts i put in my truck have come from the boneyard, block, zq8 + pitman arm, 4x4 center link, scirocco radiator, front disc, rear disc, etc. if you check everything out and don't just slap it on you will be fine. if you are running the hp that ed is then don't swap in stock c-clip axle assys. most people aren't pushing their sytys that hard and don't need to sink a bunch of loot into their trucks to have a reliable vehicle. mine would be the perfect example.

#2875, so you don't need a TH400 or 4L80e. A 700r4 is fine for you.

Swoop, your thread got majorly hijacked, did we offer anything that helped you out?

I just realized you only had 42 posts. We've been putting up with the 700 for YEARS. Rear planetaries, sprags, input drum, aluminum forward pistons, outputshaft, sprag, reaction carrier shaft, overrun clutch hub, you name it we've broke it.

Sorry for not responding just been busy workin. I know the trouble I had a 93 S10 Blazer lifted 3.5" with 32s and went through 3 trannys. Seems to be the major flaw in these trucks. The vortec 4.3 had plenty of power and was a solid engine, and sounded mean as hell with long tubes and a 2.5" exhaust. I cant wait till Im done with the ty because its the engine I've always wanted for this truck, a true beast.

Right click on the pic to get the properties.

Then highlight the entire name and location of the file for example:

Click on the little pic of the mountains with the sun above on the tool bar.
When the window pops up, paste that info from the properties into the window.
Then instead of text, you'll get this:

Make sure you use a big arse cooler on it because when your having fun spinning the tires, your trans will get hot. Looks like fun

Re: 95 4L80e

yea she did have a tranny cooler on her. after getting a new engine and trans in her I was driving to virginia to go visit a friend at college and it blew up half way down. it kept poppin out of overdrive so we pulled off on an to an exit and turned out to be in the most ghetto part of washington. 2 white boys in the most ghetto of ghetto at 2am was a pretty funny sight. so we bought 9 quarts of tranny fluid and limped home in second gear at 45 mph. that was a pretty lame night.

so now I have the jeep which has made it to memphis, lake george, virgnia, no problems knock on wood. but now I have the typhoon as well so it worked out well
