92 Typhoon in Indiana

Hi! I've always been fascinated with these trucks, and I finally had the opportunity to buy one. Traded a thirdgen camaro that I restored for this 92 Ty. It's got a clean body and chassis, but will need a bit of engine work and interior work. Previous few owners have modified things, and it runs rough. I'll be converting a lot of stuff back to stock to get a good baseline first. I'm in Lafayette Indiana, north of Indy. I also own a 1985 irocz swapped to sealed LS1/4l60e. Let me know if you want to know anything about either of them!

92 Ty:
144k miles
10k mile vortec short block with ARP head studs and stock syty cam/heads. Stock intake and exhaust assembly as well.
Piggyback chip (going to figure out what was changed, then probably convert back to stock).

Where'd you find the truck at? I know of a wht/wht Typhoon that used to be in Lafayette several years ago. Had 20s on it I believe. Haven't seen a red/gry Ty in Indy since probably 98 or so.

Wow that really looks like a 93 with the decals and painted grille,no escutcheons and the big letter tailgate latch.

Seats and roof rack appear correct for '92. Looks like it was repainted.

Hey IrocZ,can I see pics of the core support decals,the door jamb decal,the sunvisors,and the overhead console?

Sure thing! I'll try to take some tomorrow after work! The headliner is actually missing but I can take pics of the items that are still in place. This truck is Titled as a 1992, maybe late 1992 shared some of the 1993 features?

Found the truck in St.Louis. It had spent most of its life in Pennsylvania actually, then brought to Texas briefly, then to St.Louis, and now Lafayette hah!

Looks like was in NY at some point (though could be titled in PA) and listed as a 92.

I think a moon roof would eliminate the overhead console of a '93 (92's didn't have them) so that wouldn't be definitive in this truck.

Also, "late 92's" didn't get 93 features as far as I know. It was pretty cut and dry...92s are 92s and 93's are different.

The fact that it's missing a decal (GMC on tailgate) and that they are gold probably means it was painted at some point. Not uncommon. Gold decals - 93, Silver decals - 92

It appears a Joel Kirouac owned this vehicle in Blairsville PA and uploaded those pics.

Based on those photos, looks like it had 168k at that point. Someone must've driven it backwards for a while. ;)

10/19/15 Update. I took the truck out of commission to fix all the things the previous owner neglected. So I've been quite busy:

Rebuilt and re-installed the stock turbo.
Added a Forge wastegate
Added a turbine blanket
Added boost gauge and pillar pod
Added aluminum cold air intake
Tested and fixed all of the boost/vacuum leaks
Tested and rewired the factory intercooler pump
Removed the factory remote oil filter + lines, using on the block filter and 10w30 synthetic
New tires on factory wheels
New NGK plugs, timing confirmed and rolled back to 0* BTDC
Reset TPS and IAC steps

I went for a test drive yesterday and the truck felt EXCELLENT. It pulled quite hard and idled around 19 inches mercury which was healthy. With the colder ambient and gutted catalyst, i would occasionally overboost to 16-17psi, so I'm leaning towards a 3bar map and turbo tweak chip soon. Next spring I may need to investigate the fuel system to make sure I'm good. All in all, I'm pleased at how well things are going!

Wanted to shout out to Tom @ Sportmachines! He has helped me quite a bit with the turbo R&R and given me some great advice. Thanks!
