8.5" rear end?

i am looking into doing my rear end to withstand some good slicks and have decent gears because the stock rear end is very restricting on what my newly rebuilt motor and tranny can do.

anything anyone knows about the 8.5" rearends would be much appreciated.

96+ S-series trucks with the 4.3 and 5 spd should have them.

They're very easily id'ed

I know it's running 9.0's in the hoovers truck. I have the same unit and it's wokring great for me too. what exactly do you want to know? it's a little larger and you might need a shrter driveshaft by an inch or so but oyu could prob keep the stocker and be fine.

mostly wondering whats in them for gears what i can get one out of and how much.
my 7.5 is going to be gone now that i have my graduation money i want to get a strong posi in so
i can put on a good set of slicks at the track and have gears that that dont suck hairy monkey nuts
my driveshaft has already been shortened because of the v8 byt about an inch
i was told to go with moser axels and find 3.55 gears or something close
my dads cousin runs a ten bolt with god knows what gears and those axels in his monte
and hes in the low 11's so whatever i can do to get more traction

Re: 8.5" rear end?

getting into one isnt going to be cheap bc they are not that common for us as a direct drop in and the ones that will were special order. with all that being said you can custom order one(with all the goodies) as I did and have it delivered for under 2500.

you can look in this gallery on the bottom of the page and top of the next for pics of mine.

yes. bolted right in stock brakes backing plates and drums. it has 33 spline mosers with c clip eliminators, a spool and welded tubes and spring pirches and alum preload cover . call DTS they have all the correct measurments for a syty to build you a great light weight rear end.

Re: 8.5" rear end?

You can get a 12 bolt for it. I have built several of these and used the original 3R u joint on them. It's a direct bolt in, and if you have the brakes with 4 bolts in the backing plate then they will bolt on too. If you have the earlier brakes with the odd bracket then you would have to get a set of the later brakes. These can be built with 30 or 33 spline axles with c clips or the 9inch Ford axle bearings to eliminate the c clips. The 8.5 can bebuilt with 28 or 30 spline axles with c clips or the 9 inch Ford axle bearings. If you buy an 8.5 then I recommend removing the Governor Lock differential and replacing it with an Eaton posi or Detroit Locker.

Ya, if you are getting a diff. Measure the width (axle tube flange to axle tube flange) for bigger wheels with out spacers and run bigger rims for bigger tires. But you have to decide on the rim you want to use.
