Re: 4l80e input shaft Group Purchase

Happy holidays. I'm going to make a run of aluminum adapters. The price is $210 plus shipping. Can I get an indication who is ready to purchase?

I have an original piece from another kit that is in use. I got the dimensions from it. I then checked it against the OEM adaptor.

I thought you made some pre-runs of the input shaft and the adapter?...These Pics:

What the status of these?

I made the adapter you see in the pic. The shaft was borrowed from a member of this board that Bruce organized. It's in an earlier thread.

I used the shaft to get my dimensions and to create tooling to hold the shaft while machining. I did assemble this shaft into Bruces Syclone transfer case. It was also fitted to a 4L80 to check its fit.

The issue I have with the shaft is that the raw material is very expensive to purchase since it has to ne special ordered. Bruce suggested I make the adaptors first to help pay for the raw material for the shaft.

The other option is that I ask you guys to pay a deposit for the shaft which we were hoping to avoid.

I'd be willing to do a deposit on the shaft...and also the adapter...I mean I'm going to need them both regardless. The adapter is pretty much useless to me without the shaft anyhow. But whichever way you feel is best/easiest for you is fine.

Why are you making the adapter out of aluminum? George Blake's and RPM's are steel? I think I remember in the creation the adapter needed to be stronger than aluminum.

I can make them out of anything you want however there is no reason to over engineer it if not needed. I thought of using steel but the sample part is heavy in comparison of Aluminum which is light and strong.

I suspect that the treads are the weakest link in this assembly. Come to think of it some of the threads on the 10 mm bolt holes were stripped/cross thread. I examined them and maybe incorrectly assumed (hate to admit it but I did) that they had been cross threaded rather than stripped because I was not able to turn a 10 mm into the hole.

My thought is that this piece acts as a spacer as far as I can tell that doesn't receive significant compressional, tensional or torsional stress in regard to the aluminums strength.

Please feel free to share any concerns with me.

I would imagine aluminum would be fine. Like you said because it will be sandwiched in there. The materials that it will be connecting are aluminum as well. (4l80e housing to transfer case adapter). Those 10mm threads are very delicate though...just like with OEM stuff.

I think this may have been why they were originally made out of steel, the adapters are not that thick and it makes me worry about it pulling out the threads.

I cant find the post that talked about it...

But in my mind while holding up the transfer case it can be really hard to get the bolts lined up and not cross thread them. I would vote that steel is stronger and less likely to cross thread...

Just a thought. Isnt the steel cheaper too?

The steel unit we used had damaged threads to begin with...I plan on using a helix coil kit on mine. Just like the brodix heads use.

I am not in desperate need of a plate yet as opposed to other people. I would like to eventually buy 2 plates and one shaft. If you need me to pay for 1 or 2 plates right now I would be happy to do so to keep this project rolling. Keep us posted on the progress and thanks again for making this happen.
