Checklist - what to do?

So I havent started my Sy in just over a year or so. Wasnt intending on having it down that long, but other things took priority in life.

Any recommendations on what I need to do before I crank her for the first time?

Im doing the obvious:

Change oil/filter - only had around 600 miles on it
Change radiator fluid/flush
Rear diff / xfer case / front diff oil change
Trans will have new fluid
Ignition is in check
fuel filter

Any other things I should check?

I would make sure the battery has a good charge. I would start the truck up with all the old fluid first, and then changed them after it has warmed up. I would crank it over a few times with the ECM fuse out to lubricate everything without the engine running.

yeah, tire psi.... im putting the stockers back on for now until I get my C5 rims painted. I sold my Z06-Rs to Ian (SyTyArchives).

Should I pour a bit of oil in before I do a dry crank with ECM disabled? All the oil im sure is sitting in the pan leaving most everthing else dry.

I don't suppose you have your distributor out, but if you do, you can do the manual oil pump prime.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about priming the motor. It'll be just fine if you crank it up. As long as your pump works you wont have any issues. I have started several cars that sat for a lot longer than 2 years and drove them for considerable periods of time with no issues.

I actually would prime it until you see oil pressure, to ensure the turbo recieves oil before startup so no damage results. Also, check for animal nests and such in the engine bay and the exhaust so there is no fire hazard.

You may even have to sacrifice something to the fire god ... The bigger the better .

Did you drain the tank before you parked it? Did you use Sta-bil? If not, then you need to drain the tank and flush the lines. There will be tons of setiment in there that will clog your filter/sock and maybe the injectors.

It lives in the garage, so no animals other than spiders. The PTE downpipe is sitting on my shelf next to the truck, so the exhaust system is clear too

Between the exhaust of the 65 and the lingering epoxy/poly resin fumes, doubt anything could live in that garage for an extended period of time.


I didnt drain the tank... I wasnt antcipating the truck to sit that long, and after awhile, it just became less important to worry about the truck and focus on other stuff. It has I think 1/4 tank in it. Of course, not great to leave it like that but oh well. I think Im gonna do like Dave says, dump fresh in and boost launch it outta the garage off the jackstands.

Ive had the truck sit for 7 months before without starting in the past.... again, with hardly any gas. Ran fine when I started it. But after this long, wasnt sure if I needed to hold any ceremonies or burn some $100 bills to the SyTY gods before startup.

Its got a fresh rebuilt trans goin in and Ive bought some toys for it to make up for ignoring her, so the POS better not give me probs.

Do you think the fuel pump was submerged while it was sitting? You saw the pics the hose when I took mine out, and now the pump is dead. In my situation I think it was because there was almost no gas in the tank since the pump had about 30 minutes on it at the most.

Im gonna chug a NOS before and after the trans install.

Burn old gas out gently.... old gas is just about guaranteed detonation.

Either that, or pump it out via the fuel rail and into a can for the lawn mower.

the only way to be sure is to put a new built long block in it with better heads and a turbo. that way you know your good to go. :tup:

Use the gas in the StyleSide. Vintage gas for vintage iron. Since it's been sitting so long and you plan on draining the oil, now would also be a good time to run some top end cleaner through it too.

The 65 is sporting 87 octane....cheap stuff too, I think it was around $3.15 when I last put some in it.

I gotta hit the dealer to go get a gasket, so was gonna pick up a can of top engine while there.

So got to thinking today.....

If the truck has been sitting for this long, shouldnt any crud and debris be sitting at the bottom of the pan and be better just to drain out now instead of starting it up and circulating any crap back through the motor?

Just curious.
