should I replace stock heads with l35 heads

I just wanted to see what some of you would do. Swap the heads or leave the stock heads on?

One side of me says get this thing back together so that I can drive and enjoy it.

The other side of me says the truck is apart and you have the heads so...

The mods on my ty are walbro fuel pump, atr aux cooler, waller larger upper intercooler, rpm stage one turbo, adj. fpr, and basic maint. like new vaccume lines ect. and code 59 when its back together.
I have a set of 1994 l35 heads and my inner fenders are off for the turbo upgrade.

I'm keeping the stock cam and the only upgrade to the l35 heads would be roller rockers.

So should I swap?

Definitely do it...its not like there is much more involved like with the Vortec heads. Just a bolt on really.

I remember seeing a guy in cali that has a white 93 ty that has a very similar build to mine. just wondering if he would chime in about the head swap.

Re: should I replace stock heads with l35 heads

I had L-35's on mine before went to ported rpm heads. alot less knock with the l-35's. less knock will save your engine. can run A little more boost with them also because of that reason. (3-5psi more)...

I have not taken anything on the motor except evrything for the egr delete and the turbo.
The front inner fenders are off.

I would keep the stock ones. Its alot work (and cost of gaskets) for maybe 20cfm of air flow and perhaps hassle of dealing with metric rocker conversions.

Re: should I replace stock heads with l35 heads

I just got done putting a set on mine. I am waiting for my new turbo(stock) to arrive before I have it all together. So I can't tell you what kind of power increase to expect.

The L35's are a complete bolt on. I didn't have to change, alter, or invent anything. The stock rockers bolted right on as well. Of course there are different part numbers for these heads out there which might effect some things like rockers.......just a guess.

But in all honesty, I wouldn't go tearing the motor apart just to do this head swap. I had to pull mine apart to put in a set of head gaskets. Had that not been the case, I never would have touched them. Now having done the job, it only increases my desire to tell you to wait until you have to pull the motor apart to swap them. The job, like most on these things, really isn't all that fun.

But you do have a pretty straight shot at the motor mounts, steering box, and steering shaft with everything out of the way. I took the opportunity to replace my steering stuff while I had the room to get to it. I did the mounts when I first got the truck.

if you're going to wait you might as well go vortecs

I don't think the vortec swap is in my future. As you can see from my current build I'm not making an 11 sec truck, just something that will put a smile on my face.

Well after thinking about it and reading tookys long posts on replacing his heads I'm thinking that now might not be the time for the head swap.
