Upper Control Arm mount

whats the purpose of this portion of the upper control arm mount? Or is it only there for me to cut myself on when a wrench slips?

The upper control arm rubber bottoms out on it,,, witch it should never happen unless your pulling the from wheels off the ground.

Are you trying to make more room for coil overs ?
i more just hate useless/sharp shit hanging off the frame. Would like to just clean everything up to just whats needed

cute a 1/2 in out,, and hammer it back together.. then weld it up,, grind it smooth,, you will thank me if you ever go with coil overs.

when they designed the front end i bet they said " Let's put this here so Mike Renz will tear his hands up on it"

I cut mine off, to make room for coilovers. The only thing I can think it is for it to reinforce the bump stops, perhaps in an Offroad situation.

yea, I cut mine off when I went to coil overs as well. I was worried that it was a structural reinforcement for the rear upper control arm mount, but it works fine without it!

Mine is getting cut off. I am going to make another bottom limiter in a much more logical place(same as newer fullsize trucks).

+1 on cutting it off for coilovers. My buddy and I have slammed our hands and heads into that damn thing way too many times.

Re: Upper Control Arm mount

ok due to popular demand i'll be cutting mine off too. I talked about this today w/ mattw during our lunch date and he has me convinced to use the newer full size truck bump stop rather than the current setup.

oh and btw...I am upgrading to the stock armed coilover setup. I bought the coilovers from TurboTime months ago, and now that i'm actually spinning a wrench or two..am getting around to installing these (amongst the large list of other stuff i need to get done)

Any pictures of progress, I don't believe you.

I have the control arms removed (well gotta yank the torsion bar so i can take the lower off completely. But i'm also cleaning the hell out of the frame since i dislike it. I'm contemplating cleaning up the welds on the frame and smoothing everything out. Yea it'll slow me down even more...but while its this far apart there is no better time to do it.

I'm only doing 1 side at a time since my garage sucks so bad. It's nice having the Ty at home for the first time in a long ass time...make it real easy to just work on it for an hour at a time and get little things done here and there. :)

Definitely for the 'rebound' stop. Looks like part of yours has already been cut off. My cars' have a longer tail sticking out. This thing, including the hole, must be for some assembly-line procedure, or fixture during frame welding, or even shipping completed frames to the assembly plants.

On coil-over conversions, do the new units bolt to the existing upper shock mount? Do you have to do any reinforcement to the stock upper mount?

Curious.............
nobody has done upper mount reinforcement. I have a prototype gusset set for them.

now that i have my truck home i plan on finishing up the design so that people can use them that think they would be beneficial. I have 0 evidence that they are required/need, but figure it can't hurt.

I'm considering just making an all new upper mount to allow the shock to sit at a different/better angle.

I've seen the 1/4" Steel ball joint Flange on a JSM prototype set bend, and the shock mount still be in fine shape. I would think that you wouldn't HAVE to have these. However you don't really HAVE to upgrade to coilovers either, so the whole idea of something being absolutely necessary is kinda moot IMO.

Looks like some good pieces Mike. I'm not sure that you need two though. A single one running parallel along the plane made by coilover shaft will be the strongest, and most likely the only one really necessary. If you really want two, I would suggest splitting each one off of that plane by ~30* or so in each direction. That would provide more than enough added support in there......Of course a new 4130 hoop with nice large flanges to weld to the frame would be totally pimp, cure the tight clearance issues, and be significantly stronger as well.....

What the hell do I know though, I don't even own a truck and doubt I'll ever buy any of your products anyway :D :D

well there is only so many places to put the gussets, and still have room to access the shock bolt on both sides...and clear the stock brake lines. Otherwise yes i'd clock them at 30 or 45 degrees. Also, another concern of mine for the upper shock tower is just ballooning from extended use. Has anyone autocrossed/road-raced a coilover setup w/ stock shock mounts? I have no clue...but i would love to see the mounts after 500 miles of race (non straight line) use.

when you guys say "cut it off" did you cut the whole thing completely off or just shave it back a little??

i likes this idea, any guess where to find one that could be modified to work for us?

Shaving it back a little so we can make room for the coil spring.
