Tips for first start

Anything in particular I need to do or watch out for when starting this thing up after siting for so long? I swapped in a stock low mile block, so it's been run before. So far all i can think of is prime fuel pump, set timing and check for leaks.

i would prime the oil pump to, and have sombody watch the oilpressure gauge

How long is so long?

Prime oil pump couldn't hurt, although is somewhat a hassle. If you do prime oil be sure to spin crank over couple times between.

I really don't know how long the engine has been sitting. At least a few years. How exactly do I go about priming the oil pump?

Re: Tips for first start

get a priming tool. take out dist. put tool in place. put an elec. drill on on it. and drill.. rotate engine, and do it again.

Re: Tips for first start

if you have an old dist. you could make your own priming tool grind off the teeth of the gear.

Re: Tips for first start

In this case I'd just pull the plugs and roll the engine with the starter until it has oil pressure. No load on the bearings that way and oil pressure is prolly gonna come right up. This will serve to purge the new filter and get fresh oil into the turbo. Both very important.

Put a battery charger on.
Pull the coil wire and crank until you get oil pressure on the gauge.

Put the coil wire on, and start.

Reality of the matter is, what you're doing is little different from the guys like me that store their truck over the winter. They're not pulling the dissy and priming.

If you're truly paranoid, cough the $ up for a pre-luber.

Re: Tips for first start

i would be paranoid if it sat for 3 years. i burned my hands starting it up like you guys after a few years. take plugs out and start untill you get pressure at WOT..and spun a bearing if the engine hasn't been taken out i wouldn't worry because it sits in oil. but if it was away dry. i wouldn't trust it.

Re: Tips for first start

I just went and got a primer. easy to remove dist anyway.I assume i turn it clockwise?
edit:another question. Do I need to run it with cheapo oil first for a little bit then use good oil? Or does it not matter since it has already run before? and should I use synthetic or not?

Re: Tips for first start

if its already broke in you can run synthetic but you're probably gonna want to change it shortly after you fire it up so i'd hold off on the synthetic till your next oil change.
