Oil Pump Pickup Install Question

I tried to install the press in Oil Pump Pickup.

It went in straight and smooth, but once installed the pickup tube seems loose. It just doesn't seem right. The original 2wd wasn't loose. Is their a special install procedure? Am I missing something>

Re: Oil Pump Pickup Install Question

Just tap it in until the hump in the pickup sets against the pump body.
Your going to braze the pickup to the pump body anyways, right?

I wasn't going to do that (it's just a stock Vortec Shortblock), but guess that I am going to do that now.

This happens sometimes. Just have the screen tack welded on. Be careful when tacking it on. It only needs a small weld. I used to take the pump aprt once I pressed them in before welding. Depending on how hot it gets, it can affect the relief spring in the pump and the clearence between the spur gears and cover.

Re: Oil Pump Pickup Install Question

could you glue it in? Araldite or something? I know it gets hot there but there must be some compounds that are used in those environments. Would save heat warpage from welding?>

My machinist made a neal tool, basically a metal tube with a side of it cut away that fit around the pickup but rested against the bead and then he used that as a point to hammer (gently!!) the pickup in. Seemed pretty snug after that. I told him about the risk of it breaking off. You are using the MEL 10553 Performance pump right? Or the old 55A?

I am using the stock GM Oil pump that came with the motor in 2003.

I tried brazing the cover/pick-up assy for my Ty a few months back. The amount of heat required to get a good 'braze' began to alarm me, (I was worried about warpege) so I stopped. (Yes, the pump was dis-assembled.) I asked my machinist what he does, and he said he arc-welded them, using a special rod that doesn't tend to crack the housing after a period of use. ( I saw a cracked housing on here. Maybe Joorgensen55?). So I had him do it. I still think it can be TIG'd or MIG'd, but I let some one that does this all the time handle it.

Definitely don't want a failure in this component...

Yep, that was me. Mine was TiG'd in place. When I installed the new pickup, I welded a strap onto the pickup that bolted to the bump (that way, no worry about heat damage and I can change it later if need be)

Re: Oil Pump Pickup Install Question

I tig them when I assemble them...just a tack weld. To be honest though , it shoukdnt have been that loose. Did you move it after you started to drive it in. And what did you use for a tool. I have a Sunnen Driver made specifically for this. I know some people drive them inon the tube ore with a 3/4 wrench up against the bead and even though it seems like its going in straight, it kinks the end and never gets tight. Also, when you removed the old one, did yopu hammer it right out ir did you turn it back and forth as you pulled it out. This come sometimes open up the bore a little.

I used 3/4 wrench & a dead blow hammer. I also stuck the tube in the freezer to shrink it alittle bit.

The old one I hammered out, but I did twist it a little bit.

Man I wish I new I would have sent you my tool to use and then yopu could have just sent it back.

I kind of did the same idea as the one pictured above.

Here is another way.
