Stock or Emission-Friendly Air Intake?

I recently took my newly aquired Ty for it's 1st required emission test and they told me I was not allowed to have an open air intake (cone) on the vehicle. So now I must replace it with something else or I won't be able to pass.

I'd put the whole stock assembly (air box to turbo) back on, but I do not have it since a previous owner is the one that installed the cone. I tried finding the assembly online, but was without luck. Does anybody know where I could find one?

I'm also open to any suggestions for emission-friendly alternatives that would not require me to install the stock assembly. An alternative method may prove to be better when taking into consideration that a previous owner had to do some relocating of other things in the engine bay to make room for the current intake. In this situation re-installing the stock assembly would require me to have to change around a few things back to their stock locations.

Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Shoulda registered it in Dodge Co like me . One thing that I've wondered is how they test AWD vehicles on the rollers. You might be able to (albeit half-assed) make a simple sheetmetal or plastic box that encloses the cone so they cant see it.

Is the "KB" cone referring to Kenne Bell? If so they used to and maybe still do make a complete kit for our trucks. Maybe you could get the box from them, or lay up a fiberglass cover then paint it black and remove it after the test. The aluminum cover mentioned works good too. I just don't see what an exposed filter is going to hurt? The only draw back I see is possibly drawing hot under hood air into the motor, but how is it going to hurt emissions?

idle test with a sniffer, works in our favor(if you HAVE to smog).

Yeah, everybody tells me I should've registered it in a non-emissions county, but I'm stupid like that and tend to do things more by the book. It's funny that your truck is registered in Dodge Co, because that's where I bought mine.

Yeah, I don't quite understand why the emission testing folks have such a problem with an open intake. I mean if you can pass emissions with it on, it shouldn't matter if you have a different air intake on the car 'cause you're obviously not violating emissions. I however did not pass the sniffer, but that is because I think I have a sensor issue. I think the only reason they looked under the hood was because I couldn't do the rollers.

I'm not sure how they do the AWD test on the rollers because they only had one roller. It's funny, because all the testing stations in the area are supposed to be able to accommodate AWD vehicles except for a couple and the one I went to was SUPPOSED to be one of the stations that could. So if they had AWD rollers like they're supposed to have in the first place, I probably wouldn't have had to pop the hood and I would now only have the problem of fixing whatever sensor that's giving me problems instead of having some enormous headache trying to find a solution for the damn air intake.

Actually, I'm not sure what the KB stands for. I'm not the one who put the cone on. The previous owner had a kb cone listed as one of the mods (he's on the forum) so I just put it down as well. Maybe I should go take a closer look at the cone and see what the KB stands for. Is a Kenne Belle system hard to find? I don't care if it's pricey because I know it's worth it if it's a Kenne Bell. I highly doubt if the emission folk would look kindly on it though.

Making a Shroud is a no-go. There's barely room for the intake itself, let alone putting some kind of shroud on it. I think the previous owner relocated the coolant overflow tank to where the air box used to be and put the intake in its place.

I even sent the previous owner a message asking if he might happen to have the stock assembly just laying around somewhere. I kind of doubt it, but it doesn't hurt to ask, right?

This is the Kenny-Bell setup minus the fiberglass box that the airfilter sets inside of. As long as all your smog is connected and it look like it you should have no problem with smog. You can make a box for your air filter that fits in the spot out of sheet metal.:tup:

Wow, I didn't even realize I had a Kenne Bell related item under my hood. That's kind of cool Unfortunately since I do not have the resources to pursue such a venture on my own, I'm gonna have to call some garages/shops to see if I can get them to make a box for me... a very temporary box :devil: BTW it's sort of reassuring to get that info from someone in CA. Everyone knows how strict things are out there, and if YOU say that I should be okay with going in that direction, I think I'll be ok if I do that.

Check with the prior owner and find out if he still has the fiberglass box. The box should look like this. This is a really old picture but you can see the box with the filter in it.

I have a stock airbox and intake tube that your more than welcome to. I removed mine because it ruined my turbo.....
