Can someone explain wastegate springs?

What does it mean when you see a wg that has say a 10psi spring? I dont get what this means or how it works, if someone could explain it to me I would appreciate it. I want to run 25 psi through my PT60. Just looking for the right waste gate.

It means that the wastegate wont even begin to operate until the spring pressure is reached in psi boost, think of it like your base boost lvl, I run a progate on the crossover with a 15# spring meaning i can't adjust my boost below 15 no matter how many adjustable controllers are on it ;p

So should I jsut get the lowest spring I can find if I want to adjust a broad boost range? Will that affect the upper boost levels?

Re: Can someone explain wastegate springs?

Hmmm, I'll buy part of this answer. If I have a 10psi spring, yes, it's gonna take 10psi of boost to start to move the WG actuator. However it may take more than 10psi of boost to actually move the actuator enough to stop additional boost. Meaning equilibrium may not be reached until, say, 12psi of boost. Did that make sense or am I full of it.:rotf: I wouldn't think it's directly pound for pound. I would agree that anything less than 10psi (assuming the turbo is spinning fast enough) ain't gonna happen.

No, you have to have a spring thats fairly close to the max boost you want to run. If you had a 2 psi spring you would never be able to bleed enough air away from the gate to make 25 psi.

Re: Can someone explain wastegate springs?

Be advised that the PT60 is actually the 2nd smallest PTE turbo, right between the PT44 and PT51 (check with PTE yourself if you dont believe me). I have a PT51 with vortec heads and a healthy 218* cam, and I maxed it out at 16-20 PSI.

I was just looking at your sig. Obviously if you run the PT60 on stock heads it will support a higher boost pressure.

good rule of thumb. whatever spring rate you get, you can only control up to 2x the spring rate.

So a 10psi spring, you can control boost between 10psi and 20psi. you can't control below, and not above.

Depends on WG. If your talking Tial or similiar there are 2 ports. One on bottom is hooked to pressure to help it open, if you duct pressure to top it will help close it.

I have seen 10psi springs make over 30psi just put pressure to the top, nothing to the bottom.

For example right now I have 4psi springs in my wg's. I have pressure going to the bottom port, nothing to the top. This gives me minimum boost for tuning purposes which for me is between 4-7psi. That is the least amount I can run. When I get ready to run more I will be ducting pressure to the top via the solenoid controlled by ECM to hold the valve closed above the 7psi I see now. (I do need bigger nut sacks first though).

Also remember the more boost you run, the less the wastegate must work.

This I know, are you saying I should get something else? I figured with the motor going where it is that the 60 wold be plenty for my goals. I want to hit low 12's. Am I dead wrong here?

You gotta clarify what you want here....

You want low 12s at altitude, which is mid-low 11s down here.

Low 11s on a PT60 is gonna be a tall order.

You said you wanted to run "25 PSI", I was pointing out that everything I know tells me a PT60 would be maxed out well before that point on the combo you're proposing. It still should make good power up to whatever point it maxes out at (maybe 18-20 PSI depending on what cam and how ported your vortecs are.)

But in light of the fact that you're at high altitude, that throws things off considerably, so I'm not sure what to tell you there.

Damn you guys are ruining my dreams here. Oh well, Ill get as far as I can go with it. Who knows, maybe a low 12 and I may be happy and call it a day.
