intercooler thoughts

as i'm rebuilding my ty, i'm tryin to decide between running a2w or a2a. i got a nice supersized a2a cooler but it's gonna be a tight fit and it's 3" in and out, kind of big to be running w/ my stock turbo for the moment. i'm thinking if i run the stock a2w i might make a resevoir under the hood that i'll be able to pack with ice. maybe a 3 gallon fuel cell where the battery used to go, anyone got in any input or thoughts on this plan? do you think the water will stay too warm under the hood when i don't have it packed with ice.

x2 on the stock A2W. Denny Raab ran 10.19 @ 130 with a PT63, L35s, stock block/crank, and a Stock Intercooler.

Re: intercooler thoughts

yeah i'm kind of leaning toward the stock setup for now, but am still considering modifying it with an ice box

Re: intercooler thoughts

Yeah I'd stay stock ic, with a larger lower.

Re: intercooler thoughts

X whatever on the stock air/water. Hint: Run the hoses to/from the cooler behind the manifold, over and down the drivers side. Reason? when you need to work on the motor (throttle body, injectors, whatever) you don't have to drain the IC. Just remove it and set it over by the anti-lock brakes. Hoses down the pas side prolly work also but there's just less room over there.:2cents:

Re: intercooler thoughts

I've got a stock system with soft lines running through the pass. side fender, and the pump is located underneath the battery tray. Works really well.

Re: intercooler thoughts

I hated every second of having the A2W. Going A2A was the best thing I ever did. Regardless of what times you can run, the FMIC looks better, functions better, and cleans up the bay real good. You certainly cant go wrong.

Re: intercooler thoughts

i'm just worried about my a2a being too big for my stock turbo and vortec heads, now if i can finish coming up w/ the money for that pte 63 in the classifieds.....

Re: intercooler thoughts

Hey Garry,

I'd hold off on the intercooler and just stick with the stock IC setup since you could realize huge gains from a bigger turbo. :D

I'm going to have an extra GT35R with a stainless steel v-band housing that will bolt up to the stock manifold. You'll need to go with an external WG on the crossover and a 3" downpipe with v-band on the turbine housing.

If your really looking to reduce intake temps, I'd leave the stock setup alone and go with an alky setup, but you'll also see cooler air from a bigger turbo.

Re: intercooler thoughts

i'd be interested in that gt35r, what are you needing for it? the plan right now calls for e85 so no need to spray. as far as bolting up, i got t3/t4 headers
