Set timing/New dm run

I finally found time to set my timing last week and since today has been the first decent day in a while, i decided to take the ty out for a data master run. I’m still getting a good amount of spark retard (2*-11*) even with my timing set correctly. My IAT peaked at 131 so i guess this is the cause of the spark retard.
I noticed that on my way to the road that i do all my runs on i was getting no spark retard (I don’t have a DM run of this but i was going by the red light on the Ultimate chip). Once the TY gets warmed up the light flashes like crazy when i punch it. I’m going to order an IC scoop after the holidays but would putting this on drop the IAT that much or will i have to go with an a/a intercooler or run alky?

Here is the run--- http://www.mediafire.com/?3ajrqa4nwmz

Re: Set timing/New dm run

I know you know that the pinging is due to the lack of octane that the engine needs. What your engine needs is based on its compression and the temperature of the engine. The intake air is a minor factor here (some but minor).

A2A and or Alky will help some but the cheapest way is to try retarding your engine just a tad more. After my rebuild with new pistons, I had to run at 2 degrees after TDC (not before). Things settled down real nice. Using the Ultimate on any of the 2 settings, I use octane boost. Also know that most fuels you find in the winter months seem to ping more than fuels you buy in the summer. For some reason, the companies use a different blend (so I’m told).

Good luck.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

I would agree. Pull another 2* and see what happens. Worked for me. I don't see a AFPR or a FP gauge listed. Without those you're prolly running lean.

Remember I am NOT an expert here. But looking at the file I see a couple of things. You're not getting full throttle TPS=88, Spark retard in relation to knock count seems excessive, Engine is at 180*. Might try a 160* t-stat.

Double check timing, I've seen it move when I've tightened the bolt. fix full throttle, make sure IC pump is actually pumping.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

When i set the timing it was over 2* retarded to begin with and i was still getting a constant 2*-12* knock. I don’t have a AFPR but i did check my base FP and it is set at 50. I want to get this knock issue fixed before i move onto anything else. I guess i'll try putting a 160* thermostat in and see if that helps any.
Could all of this knock cause me to blow my engine? I bought the truck with a ton of problems and im just starting to get it all under control. I recently purchased data master to see what’s going on in the engine and found out i was over boosting due to a broken rubber elbow. I’m just afraid that I’m going to put all this time and money into the truck when its just going to bite me in the ass down the road and turn into an even bigger money pit.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

you tried dumpin some high octane in to make sure it's not false knock?

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Are you sure FP is at 50? Reason I ask is a stock FPR won't go that high I don't believe and anything aftermarket would be adjustable I would think. I was also wondering about false knock. Do you have 100 available anywhere near you?

Re: Set timing/New dm run

I had a tech at my parents shop check the FP to make sure it was at 50 and they said it was fine. It smells like its sunning a little rich but that may be from my open exhaust. I'll double check and make sure where it is at though. The highest octane that i could purchace is 93 pump gas. Do you think i should try and mix some Xylene in the gas to see if its false? What could cause false knock, im a little confused on that subject.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Also, wouldn't a false knock be showing when the engine is both cold and warmed up? My knock seems so only show up once my engine is warmed up and IAT numbers are high. Im going to make a DM run now that its been sitting for a few hours so you could compare when its cold vs warm

Edit: I just went for another DM run and i still had knock . Here is the file- http://www.mediafire.com/?4bmcmnayvzb

Re: Set timing/New dm run

I would still say double check your timing and consider a fuel pressure gauge that you can watch while driving to see if fuel pressure follows boost. (50# base plus 14# boost should be close to 64# total FP)

Do you know which plugs are in the engine and what kind of shape they are in? Also, a Stage1 with stock injectors may be putting you on the edge of running lean. I've just finished putting the Stage1 on mine and am running 40lb injectors with AFPR set at 48lbs base pressure... I can send you a DM file from one of my runs if you want to compare.

I would also not think about alky or a2a until you get it running right with what is on the truck right now. Having modified things you need to make sure your fuel pressure is correct, your AFR's are on the money, and then pull timing out until you reach the limits of your boost and octane settings.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

I can't view the dm files from work (sites blocked) but I would try idling and reving the motor.. see if you get any knock that way and if you do then most likely it's false knock.. then you can start your journey on trying to locate what's rattling or banging to set the knock sensor off prematurely.

If not i'd suggest getting better fuel.. I've noticed myself that Shell gas sucks ass.. just a thought.

Also when is the kr occuring? is it happening during shifts or in higher boost?

What type of plugs are you using and what gap?

What exactly is your fp set at? Do you know the proper way of checking your fuel pressure?

Could you please send me a dm run of your setup? rgburmeister@verizon.net

I have a stage1, a2a, 3bar map, t1-18ish bin, stock injectors, ngk ur5 plugs gapped @ 30 and am having zero knock... except during up shifts on occasion but i'd like to compare with your file.

Thanks

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Im not getting any knock at idle when i rev it up. I’m not using brand name gas, its from a shop down the street from me that i have an account at. It says 93, but next tank of gas i will try mixing in Xylene to boost the octane. I have NGK UR5 plugs in there but i didn't touch the gapping, its set to whatever it was when i took them out of the box. It seems that once i get up to about 6-8psi i have a constant 2*-11* knock count. What would you suggest doing first, boosting the octane or investing in a AFPR and a FPG? I’m fairly new to the syty world so any suggestions are appreciated

You should make a thread about what type of gap would be best for you and list your mods and see what others have had good results with then regap your plugs.. Mine are ngk ur5's at 30 but each truck is different but with the thread idea you'll get a range of what you can try.. or hell ask Mike Lee who you bought the turbo off what he would recommend you should run.

You have a larger turbo and plan to move up from there.. so i'd say you should have a afpr and it's normally one of the first mods needed to help with other mods so i'd say spend the money for one and pickup a cheap fp gauge that you can attach to the fuel rail and tape to your windshield.. drive around and see what's going on and try different fuel pressures and see how it effects your knock.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Okay, thanks for all your help. One last question, where is the FPR located on these trucks?

On the pas side bolted to the fuel rail.. here's a pic of mine

and no the engine bay isn't that dirty anymore :)

Thanks! It looks like a pain to change on a stock engine bay.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Well it depends. If you have stock intercooler lines then removing them and replacing them with hose is good first mod. After that setting the intercooler aside is easy and makes a huge difference. Like most things on these trucks give yourself plenty of time.

Yea, thats what i figured. I plan on replacing all the metal IC lines also so i'll just do everything at once.

Hi Ryan, I'm sending an email with DM file.... shout back on this thread if you don't get it.

Re: Set timing/New dm run

Could you send it to me also so i could save it and compare it when i get all my work done? Also, how far is your wastegate rod adjusted in on your stage 1?
