best upgrades to run 12's?

I currenlty have a 91Z28 that is bad a$$. New engine/tranny and is superhcarged and runs low 12's but it's hard to drive as traction is always an issue in first and second gear! Anyway, I have wanted a typhoon for many years and found one at a local dealership. I test drove the typhoon and I was really disapointed in the performance, please don't think I"m dissin yall, I"m not! I had a hard time getting the typhoon into first gear and I was uncomfortable on hammering on the throttle with the sales rep in the car with me. I really did not want to beat on the car. But I did put my foot down and I was not that impressed when the typhoon dropped into second gear. My delema is to trade my Z that has new forged engine, AFR heads, Tranny and $$$$ invested for that typhoon which as 100K miles on it. Then the added costs of upgrading the typhoon to get the power I want out of it.

So my question is what will it take to get the typhoon to run hi 12's? I met a guy @ the local track and he rigged some sort of adjustment to increase his boost and put a larger down pipe on his TY and he was running 12.9's all day long. I was really impressed with his typhoon! I have wanted a typhoon since then!

I was thinking larger downpipe and adjustible waste gate with the stock set up might get me into the low 13's or hi 12's? Or will I need a larger turbo/intercooler/larger injectors to get me where I want to be?

High 12s isnt hard to do. 3 bar map, walbro 255, bigger imjectors, meth, chip, exauhst and some lovin.

From a roll, wow, I was like......"that's it?" when I test drove the typhoon. My Z can actually run into the mid 11'throw me into the back seat when I hammer on it as it drops into second gear. Consequently, is a huge issue! I also have an N20 kit once I modify a ford 9inch for my Z28 but, I may just sell my Z instead of messing with it any longer. I really want a typhoon! Ever since I saw that one at the track....I was in love! I was hoping to sell my N20 kit and all it's goodies...which I have yet to use...and purchase the extra's for my Typhoon. I had considered just putting the n2o on the typhoon, but I would rather have no bottle and all throttle. I also have a twin turbo kit in my garage my buddy made for his camaro..He left town and gave it to me. I have the Garett T3 turbos. How does the Garett T3 turbo compare to the typhoon's turbo? Would it be an upgrade to use one of the Garret T3 turbos in place of the typhoon turbo? My thoughts as of now are to get a larger turbo, injectors, down pipe and maybe intercooler upgrade. First, I have to sell my Z28.

I just received a call from the dealership inquiring my possible trade.

I am really torn as I find it difficult to part with my Z as it only has 5K miles on the tranny/engine with all forged parts, AFR heads, rebuilt supercharger and a ton of TLC. I may go for it, however the typhoon has a little over 100K miles on it?

How are the typhoons for life on the engine...yea, I know that it is how the car was taken care of, driven ect... I'm just leary of traning my baby for a car that has high miles.....But its a typhoon and the exact color I want too.

SyTy's are kind of umipressive at 25-30 mph when they are at the end of fist but the tranny won't down shift. However, their is a good chance the motor just wasn't running right.

To run high 12's you don't need bigger injectors/turbo/intercooler, those are the mods you need to beat your Z It really just need a few reliability mods, higher boost, tuning and Alky or good gas.

how do you get more boost out of the turbo? And ALKY? Are you refering to the alky controller? I have the alky controller on my Z but I use water injection, not alcohol.

Getting more boost out of the turbo is simply a matter of adding a manual boost controller. With these trucks, however, you'll need a 3-bar MAP sensor and a chip setup for it (Ultimate, Code 59, etc) to boost anything beyond 15psi.

Alky injection one-ups water in that in addition to the charge cooling from its latent heat of vaporization, it is also a fuel. This will allow cooler charge temps as well the ability to stretch out a stock fuel system.

There are guys on here that have gone deep in the 12's without opening the motor or changing the turbo. Good fuel and/or Alky, more boost, a free flowing exhaust and lots of tuning can get you there. :tup:

I'm not sure what your Camaro traps, but I traded my modded Spirit R/T (trapped 108-110mph consistently) for my Syclone. I only trap 98mph now, but I can give 460whp Cobras a good race from a dig on the street. My R/T would not stand a chance. If you do decide to trade and have some patience getting the tune right, you will not be disappointed.

The stock wastegate actuator opens up at 8-9 psi and controls boost at that level (atleast when working properly). The stock ECM uses a boost solenoid to bleed off pressure to raise the boost and the MAP sensor to be able to control it in a closed loop. You will need a 3 bat Map sensor to go above stock boost levels for both fuel ing and boost control. With the stock turbo (and undersized wastegate) I recommend keepin the stock ECM control or using an external wastegate (ie don't use an manual boost valve or aftermarket boost control, because they often spike and over shoot the boost target)

Before trading... I would go back and test drive that typhoon again.. but this time stomp that bitch from a dead stop because that's where the power lives... you need to see if you can live with having a suv that has all it's balls light to light and just plants you in your seat smoothly where as if your z most likely is violent during shifts and squirrelly.

It sounds funny but my sy to my supercharged mustang was a night and day difference in feeling but close in performance.. at times I felt like the sy was boring and it was fun to bang gears and her the charger wine in the mustang.. so you have to really think this through... test drive the ty again but seriously

Thanks for the advise! I have been thinking of driving the typhoon again. I have also been considering selling my Z on autotrader, then purchasing a lower milage typhoon. This dealership may be interested in my Z for a second sale as I am going to be in the market for a 3/4 ton truck once our house sells.

So where is the best place to buy;

3 bar map?
chip? and which one?
Boost valve to increase boost?
Larger free flowing exhaust?..I'm guessing 3 inch?

I have a mufflex 4 inch system on my Z28. Also, should I remove my cats on the TY? I live where they do not test for emmissions.

I did my own DIY water injection and can easily do that part for cheap!

I forgot to ask about my N20 kit. I have a universal NX N2O kit with a progressive timmer, bottle opener, bottle heater capable of giving me 150hp @ the wheels.

I was going to sell this entire kit, then purchase a new turbo/injector exhaust system.

I could purchase a chip, 3 bar map, and boost valve kit now. Then install the N20 and run a 50 shot and go from there? Just wondering if anyone her has run N2O on their SY/TY?

Do all full tune up first then = 3 Bar chip, 3bar map, lose the cat, get a good exhaust,run 20pounds of boost, get the converter loosened up about 500 rpm and boost launch the shit out of it!! 12s.
