Going to 2WD temporarily?

Ok, so I have an interesting situation.

I am in the middle of doing my LSx swap and have everything "big" except my 4L80E and wiring harness. I'm currently waiting for the input shaft for my BW4472 from George Blake. I would like to run his "street/strip" 4L80E, and I'm packing money away for that. Problem is, I don't want to have my truck down quite that long just due to personal reasons.

What would be the harm in using my 6.0L motor mated to a 2WD 4L80E and running the truck 2WD for a few months while I get the money for the transmission and maybe send my transfer case to GB or a shop to have my input shaft put in. Then once I have the new killer transmission, torque converter, input shaft, TCI controller, Gilbert propshaft, etc, I can pay a shop to put it in for me? If you have noticed in my thread, I don't exactly have the best area to work on a truck (no garage, in the backyard of a house in the grass).

Can anyone think of a disadvantage to going mouting a 2WD 4L80E in the truck using JSM's crossmember until I get the AWD setup back?

I know I'd need a driveshaft and that's not a problem. I just fear that the relationship with the person that owns the house where my truck is may go south soon, so I would like to get the truck back together ASAP.

Anyhow, if you could share your thoughts on that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Going to 2WD temporarily?

The crossmember won't work since it mounts to the 4wd adaptor stuff. Well let me rephrase that I am 95% sure it won't.

Otherwise it is doable, although you will need 2 different driveshafts made up to do it, so add that expense also.

Hmm, does the tranny mount by the transfer case?? Money's not really an issue, where time is.

Maybe I'll have to put my 700 back in for a while. :(

Ok, looking at the housing, I see where it is going to be a problem. I thought it bolted to the tranny case, not the transfer case.

Oh well, thanks for the help. :)

The 700 might be your best option, since it worked fine I think, no other parts to change, and will bolt right up. Just take it easy until the 80e goes in. Worse case it blows up....and your replacing it anyways.

That sucks, about the deal on the house going south. I'd hate to rush a job like this, but I guess you got to do what you got to do. Good luck!

Yeah me too, but that's why I bought most of the little things first just in case this stuff happened. With the harness purchased today, I technically can get the motor in the truck, start it up and drive it away with what I have.

Even if its not running, you're not sunk. Having a rollback come and grab the truck (or a buddy with a trailer, if you've got one of those) is a viable option. Rollback service shouldn't be that expensive, but depends upon how far its got to go (In my area, it'll cost me a $55 hookup fee and about $3 a mile to have a vehicle towed).

You could make the 2wd 80E work, but you would need to fab a new crossmember (not sure of your fab skills / equipment) and driveshaft (and would need to have the 80E controller hooked up too). 700R4 / BW4472 might be a simpler mechanical solution, although that will really depend upon exact engine placement (so that the trans mounts line up).

He is using turbotime engine mounts. I know the 700 will bolt up, and honestly with what is going on might be best to work out bugs of motor first before 80e goes in and trying to wire it up at the same time.

Yeah I'm just going to put the 700 back in for now. I just hate to take a step back in my project.
