lash on rockers.

I have a stock cam, lifters with 1.52 roller rockers. how much past zero lash should I set the rockers. I know stock is around one turn. Should I set these the same. The rockers are from rpm and I did e-mail mike. He should get back with me tomorow but I have started them tonight. Thanks

Re: lash on rockers.

Either wait or go with one turn. If you do the one turn then if Mike says different you'll know where everything is and can just change them without having to come back to -0- lash.

Thats what I was thinking. I printed your post on setting the lash you posted a while back. Thanks Don. Makes sense. I gan always back them off.

Very interesting. My variation of that is, in my opinion of course:rotf: , better. Instead of watching for full lift on a particular valve I watch for "overlap" when both valves are open at the same time. using his sequesnce for our engines:

14
63
52

Meaning 1 & 4 travel together ect. So watching both #4 valves and stopping when they are in overlap #1 will be at TDC and you can do both #1 valves. And so on from there. It looks like his system takes 4 turns of the crank, mine only takes 2 (both take some turning to get to a starting place.)

If you want proof of my system just put #4 in overlap and look how close your are to TDC on the dampener.

Re: lash on rockers.

All those methods would give me a headache! :rotf: J/K

Comp or crane has the simple version.

One cyl at a time:

To adjust the intake valve:
*Rotate engine till the exhaust pushrod/lifter/rocker just starts to move.
*Tighten the rocker nut to 0 Lash and go 1/4-1/2 turn.

To adjust the Exhaust valve:
*Rotate engine till the intake pushrod/lifter/rocker go's down and 2/3's back up.
*Tighten the rocker nut to 0 Lash and go 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

One cyl at a time. Move to the next and do the same. No hopping around the engine and wondering if you adjusted that one or not. Works on all engines and lifters. If it's a solid roller or solid cam you'd not go 1/4 to 1/2 turn you'd be setting the actual lash from valve stem to rocker with a feeler gauge. But it's the same process and easy because you know that your doing one cyl at a time.
That's my method.

Lot of turning but I like that yur doing one cyl at a time. My method does that but requires looking at a different cyl. Interesting that you put the intake and exhaust in different positions, possible point of confusion but if that's the case you prolly shouldn't be adjusting valves it first place.:D

Re: lash on rockers.

We did that method when we had solid rollers in our small block stuff. Just had a guy bump the key and set the lash as per the cam card. It was a quick way that was acurate even if your off a little on where the rockers are. I learned the way your talking about in school and used it till I found this way. It'll get the job done either way.. Just different ways. Just as long as they get adjusted properly it realy does not matter!

Just for fun and my own curiosity I'd like to hold a cam in my hand (or have one in a bare block) and look at the lobe positions to see what, if any, differences there might be in the two methods...

Re: lash on rockers.

The way I've been using just puts the valve your adjusting at the bottom of the lobe where there is no lift.

The method you've been using puts it in a place where several are adjustable at the same time but you'd have to do it directly by charts or you'd have several mis-adjusted.

We just go one at a time because we have limited brain power :rotf:

If you've got the intake/exhaust valves that need adjusted memorized and the cam in the right spot there's no problem doing it like alot of books tell ya to. Just like anything.. you do it enough times and it'll be natural. I had to put a big sbc fireing order sign in my old shop because the guys could not memorize it  I'll bet they still can't to this day even though I pounded into their heads.. How hard is 18436572? Isn't it kinda like 867-5309 in that song ?
Oh well.. .:)
