Broke my new tranny

So I have driven it maybe 10 miles. At first it owuldnt shift very well. I took it by the guys shop who uusally coaches me to make sure I had the TV adjusted properly. So I drove it home after adjusting it and decided to see if it would build boost with the new 3k. I spooled it up and it spooled nicely. Right after that it felt kinda odd. I got it hoime and decided to swap valve bodies. I had a non SYTY one in there and was convinced that was the problem. Well I did it today and when I pulled the pan I found edecent size chunks of metal in there. Im not sure what they are from yet but it is a mix of steel and aluminum. If its the TQ C I will be a mad SOB. I guess ill have to take it out here soon and open it up and see what hte hell happend.

ouch. Now I dont feel bad having a trans last only 4k miles. :D
For how much you race your truck you should go to a 4l80E. I am right now. I just hope its worth the 5500$ Its going to cost me.

So did you break your old one? I remember reading you were trying to and couldn't ... and now 10 miles on this one?! WTF?!

Re: Broke my new tranny

My old one is still good. Has a leaking front pump seal and pan gasket. Still shifted great and everything. The fluid looked ok in it so its definately usable but Im not going to give up on this one. I found out after some detective work, that the boost valve snap ring actually broke and let the boost valve hang down. This would explain my crappy shift Im thinking. Also the TV plunger was sticking like a SOB but that could be due to the metal that came about. Im still clueless to where the metal is from. The plan right now is to put on the other SYTY valve body, get everything else back together and see what happens. If it screws up again I just yank it and find out whats wrong.

Re: Broke my new tranny

Do yourself a favor and get one of the 3/8" line inline filter(temporary) and some flexible transmission hose and plumb it in on the line coming out of the cooler going back to the trans. Your cooler has crud in it. No doubt in my mind. Most likely, your old converter is dumping out crud and pumping it back into your new build. Get the Transgo Jr shift kit for the 700/4l60. It will have a no stick TV valve lineup. It WILL NOT stick. Before you take it on it's maiden voyage, do a full check on it. Hook a pressure gauge up and have someone help you go through all the checks. This way you can check it before you take it out and get stranded somewhere.

Re: Broke my new tranny

Actually, the valve body I recently got from another board member has one of those non stick TV line ups. I am using that vlave body. I hope it is old crap. I am using a brand new convertor. Im going to buy some more flush because I had only had a half a can and on Sunday when I put it all together, I couldnt find a can of flush at Autozone. NAPA was closed so I used waht I had left and then used my trusty old air compressor knowing it wouldnt realy do shit. Think I should flush through the tranny itself or is that a waste?

Re: Broke my new tranny

No. Just do the inline filter after the cooler. If you can, try to do the deal where you pull off the line coming out of the trans and let it flush into a bucket for 15 seconds, make sure your getting at least 1 quart(more preferably), shut down and then refill. The last place the fluid goes before leaving the trans is the Torque converter. This means any crap that was in the converter goes straight to the cooler and dumped into the trans where it goes straight through the pressure regulator assembly in the pump and the TV lineup in the trans. Just get you a filter after you flush about 5 quarts through it to verify your not getting any more big chunks of stuff and you'll probably be OK. Watch out when you do this. I've had these lines shoot fluid 8-10 feet (with just a .500 TV boost valve).

Thats the boost valve I replaced the stock one with. Can a find an inline filter local? Will one of those clear view fuel filters work? I wanna be aqble to see it if possible. Which line from the trans is out? Is it the top or bottom one, I forgot. Thanks for the help btw I appreciate it.

Re: Broke my new tranny

I can get you a filter if you want. They're like $10 or $15. I get them from Dacco. They're like 10 minutes from me.
On which line to hook it into, the top line on the COOLER is the return(stock cooler).

No shit, what was the outcome?

On #5 I learned to build it myself. It's worked ever since. I've had mine apart so many times I can do it in my sleep.

There is a .2% chance you'll find a local trans shop that can build you a trans that will last.

Find someone with lots of experience in SyTy trannies, and pay them to fix it right.
Otherwise, take the time to learn how to do it yourself. And, it will take a fair amount of time.

Or, do the 80e conversion. The cost is still prohibitive for a lot of folks, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than 5 trans rebuilds. Particularly if you race it a lot.

. If you have any doubts to that quote ask any owner whose ownership of these things is measured in years not months... I'm on 700-R4 number three and when it goes, this is going in:

Re: Broke my new tranny

Uh...noones ever built my trannies but me. I learned when the cheapest buiold I could find was 2500. Im on my fourth and this is the first problem Ive ever had. Im not going to say Im a pro at it but I wouldnt say I dont know what Im doing either. Whatever this metal is, if its not the convertor it has to something lame I may have over looked or something. I try to be as thorough as possible so I really dont think its something I did. Well see though I guess. BTW, Ive been saying that for a long time when others post about their tranny nightmares.

Yep. Bottom out. Top return.

A little late now, I took some other boneheads advice and he told me the opposite, quite a mess on my garage floor. Im convinced the metal was left over crap. I flushed the lines a few times and still got nasty sludge til it was clear cleaner. I ran some fluid thorugh like you said as well and it came out clear with no filings or anything. Onl;y one problem, I got it all back together and when I put it in reverse, it went into gear but ouldnt move. I didnt try to force it cause immediately I thought to myself SHIT!!! I out the sprag in backwards. So I have to take oit out anyway. I have been driving it though. It doesnt shift like Ild like it to. IM going to just pull it apart and go over every little detail before I put it back together. I really cant bel8ieve Im having this problem. I always triple check sprags. I dont know how I couldve screwed it up. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
